| 2 | Mechanisms underlying attenuation of apoptosis of cortical neurons in the hypoxic brain by flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi显示文摘Flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, an antioxidant, markedly improve memory impairments and neuronal injuries. In the present study, primary cortical neurons of rats were exposed to potassium cyanide to establish a model of in vitro neural cell apoptosis. Inhibition of apoptosis by flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi at concentrations of 18.98, 37.36, and 75.92 μg/mL was detected using this model. These flavonoids dramatically increased cell survival, inhibited cell apoptosis and excessive production of malondialdehyde, and increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and Na+-K+-ATPase in primary cortical neurons exposed to potassium cyanide. The flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi were originally found to have a polyhydric structure and to protect against cerebral hypoxia in in vitro and in vivo models, including hypoxia induced by potassium cyanide or cerebral ischemia. | 3 | Expression and clinical significance of HIF-1α,VEGF and Survivin in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the expression and correlation of hypoxia inducible factor 1α(HIF-1α)and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and Survivin proteins in biopsy specimens of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC), and then determine whether the levels of expression of these proteins could predict the clinical effectiveness of radiotherapy in individual cancers.Methods:The expressions of HIF-1α,VEGF and Survivin were shown by S-P immunohistochemical stainingmethodinbiopsyspecimensofESCC,whichwereobtainedendoscopicallyfrom50patientsbeforeradiotherapy,and 10 cases of normal esophageal tissue.Results:The positive expression rates of HIF-1α,VEGF and Survivin were 68%,74% and72%inESCCrespectively.However,thethreetumormarkershadnegativeexpressionsinnormalesophagealtissue.The positive rate of HIF-1αwas positively correlated with VEGF and Survivin proteins.The positive rates of HIF-1αand Survivin were closely related to the clinical stage,radiotherapy effectiveness and survival,otherwise,the expression of HIF-1αwas closely related to distant metastasis;both of them were no correlation with the differentiation degree of tumor.The effective rates of radiotherapy and mean survival periods of those cases with positive and negative expressions of HIF-1αwere 8.8%, 10 months and 81.25%,25 months,respectively.The one,two,and three years survival rates of patients with positive and negative expressions of HIF-1αwere 38.2%,5.9%,2.9%,and 81.3%,54.2%,15.8%,respectively(P=0.001).Patients with HIF-1αpositive expression obviously survived less than those with negative expression and the difference was significant. The expression of VEGF was only related to the distant metastasis.Conclusion:Over expressions of HIF-1α,VEGF and Survivin were found in ESCC.The positive rate of HIF-1αwas positively correlated with VEGF and Survivin proteins.The expression of HIF-1αmay serve as an important parameter in evaluating response for radiotherapy and prognosis of ESCC. | 4 | Biomechanical analysis of optic nerve injury treated by compound light granules and ciliary neurotrophic factor显示文摘In this study, rabbit models of optic nerve injury were reproduced by the clamp method. After modeling, rabbit models were given one injection of 50 ng recombinant human ciliary neurotrophic factor into the vitreous body and/or intragastric injection of 4 g/kg compound light granules containing Radix Angelicae Sinensis and Raidix Paeoniae Alba at 4 days after modeling, once per day for 30 consecutive days. After administration, the animals were sacrificed and the intraorbital optic nerve was harvested. Hematoxylin-eosin staining revealed that the injured optic nerve was thinner and optic nerve fibers were irregular. After treatment with recombinant human ciliary neurotrophic factor, the arrangement of optic nerve fibers was disordered but they were not markedly thinner. After treatment with compound light granules, the arrangement of optic nerve fibers was slightly disordered and their structure was intact. After combined treatment with recombinant human ciliary neurotrophic factor and compound light granules, the arrangement of optic nerve fibers was slightly disordered and the degree of injury was less than after either treatment alone. Results of tensile mechanical testing of the optic nerve showed that the tensile elastic limit strain, elastic limit stress, maximum stress and maximum strain of the injured optic nerve were significantly lower than the normal optic nerve. After treatment with recombinant human ciliary neurotrophic factor and/or compound light granules, the tensile elastic limit strain, elastic limit stress, maximum stress and maximum strain of the injured optic nerve were significantly increased, especially after the combined treatment. | 8 | Carbon Dynamics in Woody Biomass of Forest Ecosystem in China with Forest Management Practices under Future Climate Change and Rising CO_2 Concentration显示文摘It is critical to study how different forest management practices affect forest carbon sequestration under global climate change regime.Previous researches focused on the stand-level forest carbon sequestration with rare investigation of forest carbon stocks influenced by forest management practices and climate change at regional scale.In this study,a general integrative approach was used to simulate spatial and temporal variations of woody biomass and harvested biomass of forest in China during the 21st century under different scenarios of climate and CO2 concentration changes and management tasks by coupling Integrated Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon budget(InTEC) model with Global Forest Model(G4M).The results showed that forest management practices have more predominant effects on forest stem stocking biomass than climate and CO2 concentration change.Meanwhile,the concurrent future changes in climate and CO2 concentration will enhance the amounts of stem stocking biomass in forests of China by 12%–23% during 2001–2100 relative to that with climate change only.The task for maximizing stem stocking biomass will dramatically enhance the stem stocking biomass from 2001–2100,while the task for maximum average increment will result in an increment of stem stocking biomass before 2050 then decline.The difference of woody biomass responding to forest management tasks was owing to the current age structure of forests in China.Meanwhile,the sensitivity of long-term woody biomass to management practices for different forest types(coniferous forest,mixed forest and deciduous forest) under changing climate and CO2 concentration was also analyzed.In addition,longer rotation length under future climate change and rising CO2 concentration scenario will dramatically increase the woody biomass of China during 2001–2100.Therefore,our estimation indicated that taking the role of forest management in the carbon cycle into the consideration at regional or national level is very important to project the forest carbon sequestration under future climate change and rising atmospheric CO2 concentration. | ZHOU Lei WANG Shaoqiang Georg KINDERMANN YU Guirui HUANG Mei Robert MICKLER Florian KRAXNER SHI Hao GONG Yazhen | 2013 | Chinese Geographical Science2013,23,5: | 3 |

| 14 | In Situ Measurement of Ammonia Concentration in Soil Headspace Using Fourier Transform Mid-Infrared Photoacoustic Spectroscopy显示文摘Ammonia(NH3) volatilization is one of the important pathways of nitrogen loss in alkaline soil, and the NH3 concentration in soil headspace is directly linked with the NH3 volatilization. Ammonia was characterized by Fourier transform mid-infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy(FTIR-PAS) and two typical absorption bands in the region of 850–1 200 cm-1were observed, which could be used for the prediction of NH3 concentration in the soil headspace. An alkaline soil from North China was involved in the soil incubation, pot and field experiments under three fertilization treatments(control without N input(CK), urea and coated urea). Ammonia concentrations in the soil headspace were determined in each experiment. In the soil incubation experiment, the NH3 emissions were initiated by the N input, reached the highest concentration on day 2, and decreased to the level as measured in CK after 8 d, with significantly higher NH3 emissions in the urea treatment compared to coated urea treatment, especially during the first 4 d. The NH3 concentration in soil headspace of the pot experiment showed the similar dynamics as that in the incubation experiment; however, the NH3 concentration in the soil headspace in the field experiment demonstrated a significantly different emission pattern with those of the incubation and pot experiments, and there was a 4-d delay for the NH3 concentration. Therefore, the NH3 concentration in the incubation and pot experiments could not be directly used to model the real NH3 emission in the field due to the differences in fertilization method and application rate as well as soil temperature and soil disturbance.
