| 1 | Clinical significance of serum procalcitonin in patients with ulcerative colitis显示文摘AIM:To investigate the association of procalcitonin(PCT)with ulcerative colitis(UC)activity.METHODS:Serum PCT levels,C-reactive protein(CRP)levels,the erythrocyte sedimentation rate,and the white blood cell count were analyzed in 18 patients with UC and 11 healthy volunteers.Serum PCT levels were analyzed by an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay.Severity assessments were based on Truelove and Witts’severity index.Correlation of serum PCT and CRP levels with UC activity was examined.Moreover,we assessed serum PCT and CRP levels in patients with a Mayo endoscopic subscore.RESULTS:Serum PCT levels in severe UC patients(n=7)(0.096±0.034 ng/mL)were significantly higher than in mild-to-moderate UC patients(n=11)(0.033±0.012 ng/mL)and healthy volunteers(n=11)(0.035±0.005 ng/mL)(P=0.0005 and P<0.0001,respectively).In addition,there was no difference in serum PCT levels between mild-to-moderate UC patients and healthy volunteers.Interestingly,patients with a Mayo endoscopic subscore of 3 points displayed significantly increased levels of serum PCT(0.075±0.043 ng/mL)compared with patients with a subscore of 2 points(0.03±0.011 ng/mL)(P=0.0302).Moreover,CRP levels in patients with severe UC or a Mayo endoscopic subscore of 3 points were not significantly higher than in patients with mild-to-moderate UC or a Mayo endoscopic subscore of 3 points.CONCLUSION:Serum PCT levels were significantly correlated with UC activity. | Shigeo Koido Toshifumi Ohkusa Kazuki Takakura Shunichi Odahara Shintaro Tsukinaga Toyokazu Yukawa Jimi Mitobe Mikio Kajihara Kan Uchiyama Hiroshi Arakawa Hisao Tajiri | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013，19，45： | 15 |
| 2 | Effects of age on survival and morbidity in gastric cancer patients undergoing gastrectomy显示文摘AIM To evaluate clinicopathological features and surgical outcomes of gastric cancer in elderly and non-elderly patients after inverse probability of treatment weighting(IPTW) method using propensity score.METHODS We enrolled a total of 448 patients with histologically confirmed primary gastric carcinoma who received gastrectomies. Of these, 115 patients were aged > 80 years old(Group A), and 333 patients were aged < 79 years old(Group B). We compared the surgical outcomes and survival of the two groups after IPTW.RESULTS Postoperative complications, especially respiratory complications and hospital deaths, were significantly more common in Group A than in Group B(P < 0.05). Overall survival(OS) was significantly lower in Group A patients than in Group B patients. Among the subset of patients who had pathological Stage Ⅰ?disease, OS was significantly lower in Group A(P < 0.05) than Group B, whereas cause-specific survival was almost equal in the two groups. In multivariate analysis, pathological stage, histology, and extent of lymph node dissection wereindependent prognostic values for OS.CONCLUSION When the gastrectomy was performed in gastric cancer patients, we should recognized high mortality and comorbidities in that of elderly. | 3 | Mutations in hepatitis B virus core regions correlate with hepatocellular injury in Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis B显示文摘AIM: To elucidate the relationship between the frequency of core mutations and the clinical activity of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related liver disease and to characterize the amino acid changes in the core region of HBV.METHODS: We studied 17 Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis B according to their clinical courses and patterns of the entire core region of HBV.RESULTS: Amino acid changes often appeared in the HBV core region of the HBV gene in patients with high values of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) or with the seroconversion from HbeAg to anti-HBe. The HBV core region with amino acid changes had high frequency sites that corresponded to HLA Ⅰ/Ⅱ restricted recognition epitopes reported by some investigators.CONCLUSION: The core amino acid changes of this study occur due to influence of host immune system.
