| 1 | Boron neutron capture therapy for malignant melanoma: first clinical case report in China显示文摘A phase Ⅰ/Ⅱ clinical trial for treating malignant melanoma by boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT) was designed to evaluate whether the world's first in-hospital neutron irradiator(IHNI) was qualified for BNCT. In this clinical trial planning to enroll 30 patients, the first case was treated on August 19, 2014. We present the protocol of this clinical trial, the treating procedure, and the clinical outcome of this first case. Only grade 2 acute radiation injury was observed during the first four weeks after BNCT and the injury healed after treatment. No late radiation injury was found during the 24-month follow-up. | 2 | A realistic appraisal of boron neutron capture therapy as a cancer treatment modality显示文摘Boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT)is a binary therapeutic modality based on the nuclear capture and fission reac-tions that occur when the stable isotope boron-10 is irradiated with neutrons to produce high-energy alpha particles and recoiling lithium-7 nuclei.In this Commentary we will focus on a number of papers that were presented at a Sym-posium entitled“Current Clinical Status of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy and Paths to the Future”,which was held in September 2017 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing.Results were presented by clinicians from Japan,Finland,the United States,the China mainland and Taiwan,China who have been working in the multiple disciplines that are required for carrying out clinical BNCT.The main focus was on the treatment of patients with malignant brain tumors,recurrent tumors of the head and neck region,and cutaneous melanomas.The results obtained in treating these patients were reported in detail and,although most of the patients with brain tumors and head and neck cancer were not cured,there was evidence of some clinical efficacy.Although there are a number of problems that must be addressed,further clinical studies to evaluate the efficacy of BNCT are warranted.First,despite considerable effort by numerous investigators over the past 40 years,there still are only two boron-containing drugs in clinical use,l-boronophenylalanine(BPA)and sodium borocaptate(BSH).Therefore,until new and more effective boron delivery agents are developed,efforts should be directed to improving the dosing and delivery of BPA and BSH.Second,due to a variety of reasons,nuclear reactor-based BNCT has ended except for its use in the China mainland and Taiwan.Therefore,the future of BNCT depends upon the results of the ongoing Phase II clinical trials that are being carried out in Japan and the soon to be initiated trials that will be carried out in Finland.If the results obtained from these clinical trials are sufficiently promising,then BNCT will have a clear path to the future,especially for patients with the thera-peutically challenging malignancies that in the past have been treated with reactor-based BNCT. | Rolf F.Barth Zizhu Zhang Tong Liu | 2018 | Cancer Communications2018,38,1: | 9 |
| 3 | Folate receptor-mediated boron-10 containing carbon nanoparticles as potential delivery vehicles for boron neutron capture therapy of nonfunctional pituitary adenomas显示文摘Invasive nonfunctional pituitary adenomas(NFPAs) are difficult to completely resect and often develop tumor recurrence after initial surgery.Currently,no medications are clinically effective in the control of NFPA.Although radiation therapy and radiosurgery are useful to prevent tumor regrowth,they are frequently withheld because of severe complications.Boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT) is a binary radiotherapy that selectively and maximally damages tumor cells without harming the surrounding normal tissue.Folate receptor(FR)-targeted boron-10 containing carbon nanoparticles is a novel boron delivery agent that can be selectively taken up by FR-expressing cells via FR-mediated endocytosis.In this study,FR-targeted boron-10 containing carbon nanoparticles were selectively taken up by NFPAs cells expressing FR but not other types of non-FR expressing pituitary adenomas.After incubation with boron-10 containing carbon nanoparticles and following irradiation with thermal neutrons,the cell viability of NFPAs was significantly decreased,while apoptotic cells were simultaneously increased.However,cells administered the same dose of FR-targeted boron-10 containing carbon nanoparticles without neutron irradiation or received the same neutron irradiation alone did not show significant decrease in cell viability or increase in apoptotic cells.The expression of Bcl-2 was down-regulated and the expression of Bax was up-regulated in NFPAs after treatment with FR-mediated BNCT.In conclusion,FR-targeted boron-10 containing carbon nanoparticles may be an ideal delivery system of boron to NFPAs cells for BNCT.Furthermore,our study also provides a novel insight into therapeutic strategies for invasive NFPA refractory to conventional therapy,while exploring these new applications of BNCT for tumors,especially benign tumors. | DAI CongXin CAI Feng HWANG Kuo Chu ZHOU YongMao ZHANG ZiZhu LIU XiaoHai MA SiHai YANG YaKun YAO Yong FENG Ming BAO XinJie LI GuiLin WEI JunJi JIAO YongHui WEI ZhenQing MA WenBin WANG RenZhi | 2013 | Science China(Life Sciences)2013,56,2: | 8 |

| 8 | Facile strategy for carbon foam fabrication with lignin as sole feedstock and its applications显示文摘This research is a follow-up to our recent discovery of a facile strategy for directly converting lignin powder into carbon foam.In this work,we report that the thermal pretreatment parameters in air can remarkably influence the formation and properties of the derived carbon foam.Thermal pretreatment parameters(heating rate,temperature,and residence time)were systematically investigated and a conversion mechanism into carbon foam was proposed.During the thermal pretreatment,relatively low temperatures,low heating rates,and short residence time hindered the formation of smooth and well-connected structures in the carbon foam.The overall product yields were similar regardless of the thermal pretreatment conditions.The densities of the different carbon foams ranged 0.27–0.83 g∙cm^(−3).The carbon foams with the highest compressive strengths(>10 MPa)were KLPC280-2-5,KLPC300-0-5,and KLPC300-2-2.5.KLPC280-2-5 exhibited a high iodine sorption value(182 mg∙g^(−1)).KLPC300-2-5 exhibited a specific capacitance of 158 F∙g^(−1) at a current density of 0.05 A∙g^(−1).The maximum evaporation rates in the solar vapor generation experiments were 1.05 and 1.38 kg∙m^(−2)∙h^(−1) under 100 and 150 mW∙cm^(−2) irradiation,respectively.The good performances are attributed to the robust,porous,and continuous structure. | Linghong Yin Zizhu Zhao Meng Han Wangda Qu | 2023 | Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering2023,17,8: | 1 |
