| 3 | Prevalence and characteristics of MAFLD in Chinese adults aged 40 years or older:A community-based study显示文摘Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) was recently proposed to be renamed metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD) with the diagnostic criteria revised. We investigated the similarities and differences in the prevalence and clinical characteristics of MAFLD and NAFLD in Chinese adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 9980 Chinese individuals aged 40 years or older was performed between 2011 and 2012 using randomized, stratifed cluster sampling in Shanghai, China. A detailed questionnaire and the results of abdominal ultrasonography, a standardized 2-h 75-g oral glucose tolerance test and blood biochemical examinations were collected. Results: A total of 9927 subjects were included in this study. The prevalence of MAFLD(40.3%) was significantly higher than that of NAFLD(36.9%)( P < 0.05). MAFLD was highly prevalent in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)(53.8%), impaired fasting glucose(35.7%) and impaired glucose tolerance(40.9%). High risk of advanced fbrosis based on fbrosis-4 was highly prevalent(14.7%) in lean MAFLD with T2DM. Among 9927 subjects, 3481(35.1%) fulflled the diagnostic criteria for MAFLD and NAFLD(MAFLD + NAFLD +), 521(5.2%) MAFLD + NAFLD-, and 181(1.8%) MAFLD-NAFLD +. The MAFLD + NAFLD-group had more signifcant metabolic disorders than those in the MAFLD + NAFLD + group(all P < 0.05). Among MAFLD-NAFLD + subjects, 82.9% had metabolic disorders. Conclusions: The new defnition of MAFLD may better reflect the pathogenesis related to metabolism. | 5 | The Impacts of Mosquito Density and Meteorological Factors on Dengue Fever Epidemics in Guangzhou, China, 2006-2014: a Time-series Analysis显示文摘Objective To explore the associations between the monthly number of dengue fever(DF) cases and possible risk factors in Guangzhou, a subtropical city of China. Methods The monthly number of DF cases, Breteau Index(BI), and meteorological measures during 2006-2014 recorded in Guangzhou, China, were assessed. A negative binomial regression model was used to evaluate the relationships between BI, meteorological factors, and the monthly number of DF cases. Results A total of 39,697 DF cases were detected in Guangzhou during the study period. DF incidence presented an obvious seasonal pattern, with most cases occurring from June to November. The current month's BI, average temperature(Tave), previous month's minimum temperature(Tmin), and Tave were positively associated with DF incidence. A threshold of 18.25 °C was found in the relationship between the current month's Tmin and DF incidence. Conclusion Mosquito density, Tave, and Tmin play a critical role in DF transmission in Guangzhou. | 6 | Acanthopanax senticosus polysaccharides-induced intestinal tight junction injury alleviation via inhibition of NF-κB/MLCK pathway in a mouse endotoxemia model显示文摘AIM To examine the effects of Acanthopanax senticosus polysaccharides(ASPS) on intestinal tight junction(TJ) disruption and nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)/myosin light chain kinase(MLCK) activation in endotoxemia.METHODS BALB/C mice(6-8-weeks-old) received continuous intragastric gavage of ASPS for 7 d before injection of lipopolysaccharide(LPS), or received ASPS once after LPS injection. Blood and intestinal mucosal samples were collected 6 h after LPS challenge. Clinical symptoms, histological injury, intestinal permeability,TJ ultrastructure, and TJ protein expression were determined.RESULTS Compared with mice in the LPS group, pretreatment with ASPS improved clinical and histological scores by 390.9%(P < 0.05) and 57.89%(P < 0.05), respectively, and gut permeability change in endotoxemic mice was shown by a 61.93% reduction in reduced leakage of fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran 6 h after LPS injection(P < 0.05). ASPS pretreatment also prevented LPS-induced TJ ultrastructure breakdown supported by increased electron dense materials between adjoining cells, sustained redistribution and expression of occludin(0.597 ± 0.027 vs 0.103 ± 0.009, P < 0.05) and zonula occludens-1(0.507 ± 0.032 vs 0.125 ± 0.019, P < 0.05), and suppressed activation of the NF-κB/MLCK pathway indicated by reduced expression of NF-κB, phospho-inhibitor kappa B-alpha, MLCK and phospho-myosin light-chain-2 by 16.06%(P < 0.05), 54.31%(P < 0.05), 66.10%(P < 0.05) and 64.82%(P < 0.05), respectively. A matched case-control study was conducted in 86 CWP patients with active PTB and 86 CWP controls without TB. A standardized questionnaire was used for risk factors assessment. Conditioned logistic regression analysis was used to identify associations between the risk factors and active PTB among CWP patients. | 10 | Three-dimensional Culture of Human Airway Epithelium in Matrigel for Evaluation of Human Rhinovirus C and Bocavirus Infections显示文摘Objective Newly identified human rhinovirus C(HRV-C) and human bocavirus(HBoV) cannot propagate in vitro in traditional cell culture models; thus obtaining knowledge about these viruses and developing related vaccines are difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a novel platform for the propagation of these types of viruses. Methods A platform for culturing human airway epithelia in a three-dimensional(3 D) pattern using Matrigel as scaffold was developed. The features of 3 D culture were identified by immunochemical staining and transmission electron microscopy. Nucleic acid levels of HRV-C and HBoV in 3 D cells at designated time points were quantitated by real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR). Levels of cytokines, whose secretion was induced by the viruses, were measured by ELISA. Results Properties of bronchial-like tissues, such as the expression of biomarkers CK5, ZO-1, and PCK, and the development of cilium-like protuberances indicative of the human respiration tract, were observed in 3 D-cultured human airway epithelial(HAE) cultures, but not in monolayer-cultured cells. Nucleic acid levels of HRV-C and HBoV and levels of virus-induced cytokines were also measured using the 3 D culture system. | 11 | Exposure Effects of Terahertz Waves on Primary Neurons and Neuron-like Cells Under Nonthermal Conditions显示文摘Objective This study aimed to explore the potential effects of terahertz(THz) waves on primary cultured neurons from 4 rat brain regions(hippocampus, cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and brainstem)and 3 kinds of neuron-like cells(MN9 D, PC12, and HT22 cells) under nonthermal conditions.Methods THz waves with an output power of 50(0.16 THz) and 10(0.17 THz) m W with exposure times of 6 and 60 min were used in this study. Analysis of temperature change, neurite growth, cell membrane roughness, micromorphology, neurotransmitters and synaptic-related proteins(SYN and PSD95) was used to evaluate the potential effects.Results Temperature increase caused by the THz wave was negligible. THz waves induced significant neurotransmitter changes in primary hippocampal, cerebellar, and brainstem neurons and in MN9 D and PC12 cells. THz wave downregulated SYN expression in primary hippocampal neurons and downregulated PSD95 expression in primary cortical neurons.Conclusion Different types of cells responded differently after THz wave exposure, and primary hippocampal and cortical neurons and MN9 D cells were relatively sensitive to the THz waves. | 12 | The Benefit Risk Assessment of Consumption of Marine Species Based on Benefit-Risk Analysis for Foods(BRAFO)-tiered Approach显示文摘Objective To assess the net health effect caused by the consumption of specific marine species based on Benefit-Risk Analysis for Foods(BRAFO)-tiered approach. Methods Twenty species were collected from the Zhoushan Archipelago, China. Concentrations of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, methyl mercury(Me Hg), and dioxin-like compounds(DLCs) in the samples were analyzed for benefit risk assessment based on BRAFO-tiered approach. Results Based on the BRAFO-tiered approach, reference scenario(no intake) and alternative scenario(intake of specific species of 200 g/week) were determined. The exposure to Me Hg/DLCs via alternative scenario of all studied species did not exceed provisional tolerable weekly/monthly intake. However, the adult population with high DLCs exposure in China would significantly exceed the upper limit of DLCs via an additional alternative scenario of some species such as Auxis thazard. The results of deterministic computation showed that alternative scenario of all studied species generated clear net beneficial effects on death prevention and child IQ gain. | 15 | Environmental pollution by persistent toxic substances and health risk in an industrial area of China显示文摘Soil is an important environmental medium that is closely associated with humans and their health.Despite this,very few studies have measured toxicants in soils,and associated them with health risks in humans.An assessment of health effects from exposure to contaminants in soils surrounding industrial areas of chemical production and storage is important.This article aims at determining pollution characteristics of persistent toxic substances (PTS) in an industrial area in China to unravel the relationship between soil pollution by PTS and human health.One hundred and five soil samples were collected and 742 questionnaires were handed out to residents living in and around an industrial area around Bohai Bay,Tianjin in Northern China.Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in soil.Mann-Whitney U and binary multivariate non-conditional logistic regression models were employed to analyze the relationship between health indicators of local residents and contaminant levels.Odds ratio (OR) and a 95% confidence interval (CI) for health incidences were also calculated.The average concentrations of DDT (73.9 ng/g),HCH (654 ng/g) and PAHs (1225 ng/g) were relatively high in the industrial area.Residents living in the chemical industry parks were exposed to a higher levels of PTS than those living outside the chemical industry parks.This exposure was associated with a higher risk of breast cancer (OR 1.87,95% CI 0.12-30.06),stomach cancer (OR 1.87,95% CI 0.26-13.41),dermatitis (OR 1.72,95% CI 1.05-2.80),gastroenteritis (OR 1.59,95% CI 0.94-2.68),and pneumonia (OR 1.05,95% CI 0.58-1.89). | Jing Li Yonglong Lu Yajuan Shi Tieyu Wang Guang Wang Wei Luo Wentao Jiao Chunli Chen Feng Yan | 2011 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,8: | 3 |
| 16 | Regeneration of Ag_XO@SBA-15 for reactive adsorptive desulfurization of fuel显示文摘Adsorbent regeneration is critical for a continuous adsorption–regeneration process and often underestimated. In this work,the regeneration of bifunctional AgXO@SBA-15 for [O]-induced reactive adsorptive desulfurization of liquid fuel is reported and further investigated. The spent AgXO@SBA-15 was regenerated in various types of solvents followed by calcination and tested in multiple desulfurization–regeneration cycles. The effects of regenerate solvents were also compared systematically. The original and regenerated AgXO@SBA-15 was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, N_2 adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectrometry. The recovery of desulfurization capacity using various solvents follows the order of acetonitrile [ acetone [ ethanol [ methanol [ water. Owing to the complete reduction of silver species to Ag^0 and severe agglomeration of Ag^0, the bifunctional AgXO@SBA-15 demonstrating [ 85%(2.60 mg-S/g) of sulfur removal dramatically reduced to \ 46%(1.56 mg-S/g) after only 1 st-cycle regeneration. It is suggested that polar organic species strongly adsorbed(or residual) on the spent AgXO@SBA-15, in that case, after solvent wash may contribute to the accelerated decomposition of Ag^+ to Ag^0 in the following calcination step. The desulfurization capacity decreased rather mildly in the later regeneration runs. | 17 | Potent anti-angiogenicactivity of B19—a mono-carbonyl analogue of curcumin显示文摘AIM: The compound B19(C21 H22 O5) is a newly synthesized, mono-carbonyl analog of curcumin that has exhibited potentialantitumor effects. This present study was performed to identify the anti-angiogenic activity of this compound. METHODS AND RESULTS: B19 inhibited migration and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells, and arrested microvessel outgrowth from rat aortic rings.In addition, B19 suppressed the neovascularization of chicken chorioallantoic membrane. Mechanistic studies revealed that B19 suppressed the downstream protein kinase activation of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) by decreasing phosphorylated forms of serine/threonine kinase Akt, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, with or without stimulating vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF). | 19 | Effects of a Multivitamin/multimineral Supplement on Young Males with Physical Overtraining: A Placebo-controlled, Randomized, Double-blinded Cross-over Trial显示文摘Objective To investigate the effects of vitamin-mineral supplement on young males with physical overtraining. Methods Two hundred and forty male Chinese field artillery personnel who undertook large scale and endurance military training and were on ordinary Chinese diet were randomized to receive a multivitamin/multimineral supplement or a placebo for 1 week. After a 1-week wash-out period, a cross-over with 1 week course of a placebo or multivitamin/multimineral supplement was conducted. Blood and urine samples were analyzed for adrenal, gonadal and thyroid hormones. In addition, cellular immune parameters (CD3+, CD3+CD4+, CD3+CD8+, CD4/CD8, CD3-CD56+, CD3-CD19+) were examined and psychological tests were performed before and after the training program and nutrition intervention. Results After a large scale and endurance military training, the participants showed significantly increased thyroid function, decreased adrenal cortex, testosterone and immunological function, and significantly increased somatization, anger and tension. Compared to placebo, multivitamin/ multimineral intervention showed significant effects on functional recovery of the pituitary-adrenal axis, pituitary-gonadal axis, pituitary-thyroid axis and immune system as well as psychological parameters. Conclusion High-intensity military operations have significant impacts on the psychology, physical ability and neuroendocrine-immune system in young males. | 20 | Acrylamide-induced Subacute Neurotoxic Effects on the Cerebral Cortex and Cerebellum at the Synapse Level in Rats显示文摘Objective To investigate acrylamide(ACR)-induced subacute neurotoxic effects on the central nervous system(CNS) at the synapse level in rats. Methods Thirty-six Sprague Dawley(SD) rats were randomized into three groups,(1) a 30 mg/kg ACR-treated group,(2) a 50 mg/kg ACR-treated group, and(3) a normal saline(NS)-treated control group. Body weight and neurological changes were recorded each day. At the end of the test, cerebral cortex and cerebellum tissues were harvested and viewed using light and electron microscopy. Additionally, the expression of Synapsin Ⅰ and P-Synapsin Ⅰ in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum were investigated. Results The 50 mg/kg ACR-treated rats showed a significant reduction in body weight compared with untreated individuals(P < 0.05). Rats exposed to ACR showed a significant increase in gait scores compared with the NS control group(P < 0.05). Histological examination indicated neuronal structural damage in the 50 mg/kg ACR treatment group. The active zone distance(AZD) and the nearest neighbor distance(NND) of synaptic vesicles in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum were increased in both the 30 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg ACR treatment groups. The ratio of the distribution of synaptic vesicles in the readily releasable pool(RRP) was decreased. Furthermore, the expression levels of Synapsin Ⅰ and P-Synapsin Ⅰ in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum were decreased in both the 30 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg ACR treatment groups. Conclusion Subacute ACR exposure contributes to neuropathy in the rat CNS.
