| 6 | Inhibition of angiogenesis and HCT-116 xenograft tumor growth in mice by kallistatin显示文摘AIM: To investigate the inhibitory effect of kallistatin (KAL) on angiogenesis and HCT-116 xenograft tumor growth. METHODS: Heterotopic tumors were induced by subcutaneous injection of 2 × 106 HCT-11 cells in mice. Seven days later, 2 × 1011 rAAV-GFP or rAAV-KAL was injected intratumorally (n = 5 for each group). The mice were sacrificed at d 28, by which time the tumors in the rAAV-GFP group had grown to beyond 5% of the total body weight. Tumor growth was measured by calipers in two dimensions. Tumor angiogenesis was determined with tumor microvessel density (MVD) by immunohistology. Tumor cell proliferation was assessed by Ki-67 staining. RESULTS: Intratumor injection of rAAV-KAL inhibited tumor growth in the treatment group by 78% (171 ± 52 mm3) at d 21 after virus infection compared to the control group (776 ± 241 mm3). | 9 | Removing ammonium from water and wastewater using cost-effective adsorbents:A review显示文摘Ammonium is an important nutrient in primary production; however, high ammonium loads can cause eutrophication of natural waterways, contributing to undesirable changes in water quality and ecosystem structure. While ammonium pollution comes from diffuse agricultural sources, making control difficult, industrial or municipal point sources such as wastewater treatment plants also contribute significantly to overall ammonium pollution.These latter sources can be targeted more readily to control ammonium release into water systems. To assist policy makers and researchers in understanding the diversity of treatment options and the best option for their circumstance, this paper produces a comprehensive review of existing treatment options for ammonium removal with a particular focus on those technologies which offer the highest rates of removal and cost-effectiveness. Ion exchange and adsorption material methods are simple to apply, cost-effective, environmentally friendly technologies which are quite efficient at removing ammonium from treated water. The review presents a list of adsorbents from the literature, their adsorption capacities and other parameters needed for ammonium removal. Further, the preparation of adsorbents with high ammonium removal capacities and new adsorbents is discussed in the context of their relative cost, removal efficiencies, and limitations. Efficient, cost-effective, and environmental friendly adsorbents for the removal of ammonium on a large scale for commercial or water treatment plants are provided. | 14 | Tu-San-Qi(Gynura japonica):the culprit behind pyrrolizidine alkaloid-induced liver injury in China显示文摘Herbs and dietary supplement-induced liver injury(HILI)is the leading cause of drug-induced liver injury in China.Among different hepatotoxic herbs,the pyrrolizidine alkaloid(PA)-producing herb Gynura japonica contributes significantly to HILI by inducing hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome(HSOS),a liver disorder characterized by hepatomegaly,hyperbilirubinemia,and ascites.In China,G.japonica has been used as one of the plant species for Tu-San-Qi and is often misused with non-PA-producing Tu-San-Qi(Sedum aizoon)or even San-Qi(Panax notoginseng)for self-medication.It has been reported that over 50% of HSOS cases are caused by the intake of PA-producing G.japonica.In this review,we provide comprehensive information to distinguish these Tu-San-Qi-related herbal plant species in terms of plant/medicinal part morphologies,medicinal indications,and chemical profiles.Approximately 2156 Tu-San-Qi-associated HSOS cases reported in China from 1980 to 2019 are systematically reviewed in terms of their clinical manifestation,diagnostic workups,therapeutic interventions,and outcomes.In addition,based on the application of our developed mechanism-based biomarker of PA exposure,our clinical findings on the definitive diagnosis of 58 PA-producing Tu-San-Qi-induced HSOS patients are also elaborated.Therefore,this review article provides the first comprehensive report on 2214 PA-producing Tu-San-Qi(G.japonica)-induced HSOS cases in China,and the information presented will improve public awareness of the significant incidence of PA-producing Tu-San-Qi(G.japonica)-induced HSOS and facilitate future prevention and better clinical management of this severe HILI. | Lin Zhu Chun-yuan Zhang Dong-ping Li Hu-biao Chen Jiang Ma Hong Gao Yang Ye Ji-yao Wang Peter P.Fu Ge Lin | 2021 | Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2021,42,8: | 9 |
| 15 | Electroacupuncture improves microcirculation and neuronal morphology in the spinal cord of a rat model of intervertebral disc extrusion显示文摘Most studies on spinal cord neuronal injury have focused on spinal cord tissue histology and the expression of nerve cell damage and repair-related genes. The importance of the microcirculation is often ignored in spinal cord injury and repair research. Therefore, in this study, we established a rat model of intervertebral disc extrusion by inserting a silica gel pad into the left ventral surface of T13. Electroacupuncture was used to stimulate the bilateral Zusanli point(ST36) and Neiting point(ST44) for 14 days. Compared with control animals, blood flow in the first lumbar vertebra(L1) was noticeably increased in rats given electroacupuncture. Microvessel density in the T13 segment of the spinal cord was increased significantly as well. The number of normal neurons was higher in the ventral horn of the spinal cord. In addition, vacuolation in the white matter was lessened. No obvious glial cell proliferation was visible. Furthermore, hindlimb motor function was improved significantly. | 17 | Effects of long-term fertilizer applications on peanut yield and quality and plant and soil heavy metal accumulation显示文摘The status of essential and potentially toxic trace elements in soils and crops can be affected by long-term fertilization practices. This study aimed to investigate changes in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) yield and kernel quality, and changes in copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd)concentrations in soil and peanut kernels after 16 years of continuous cropping with different fertilization treatments. Five fertilization treatments were applied at a red soil site in Southeast China:chemical fertilizer (F) containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, F+trace elements (FT), pig manure (M), M+effective microorganisms (MB), and MB+trace elements (MBT). Properties of soil and pig manure, heavy metal contents in soil and peanut kernels, and the compositions of amino and fatty acids in kernels were determined. Application of pig manure significantly increased peanut biomass, kernel yield, and crude protein and total amino acid contents in kernels, but led to higher amounts of Cu, Zn, and Cd in soil and higher amounts of Zn and Cd in peanut kernels compared with that of chemical fertilizer. | 19 | Functionalized scaffolds to enhance tissue regeneration显示文摘Tissue engineering scaffolds play a vital role in regenerative medicine.It not only provides a temporary 3-dimensional support during tissue repair,but also regulates the cell behavior,such as cell adhesion,proliferation and differentiation.In this review,we summarize the development and trends of functional scaffolding biomaterials including electrically conducting hydrogels and nanocomposites of hydroxyapatite(HA)and bioactive glasses(BGs)with various biodegradable polymers.Furthermore,the progress on the fabrication of biomimetic nanofibrous scaffolds from conducting polymers and composites of HA and BG via electrospinning,deposition and thermally induced phase separation is discussed.Moreover,bioactive molecules and surface properties of scaffolds are very important during tissue repair.Bioactive molecule-releasing scaffolds and antimicrobial surface coatings for biomedical implants and scaffolds are also reviewed. | Baolin Guo Bo Lei Peng Li Peter X.Ma | 2015 | Regenerative Biomaterials2015,2,1: | 8 |
| 20 | Adsorption and desorption characteristics of diphenylarsenicals in two contrasting soils显示文摘Diphenylarsinic acid(DPAA) is formed during the leakage of aromatic arsenic chemical weapons in soils,is persistent in nature,and results in arsenic contamination in the field.The adsorption and desorption characteristics of DPAA were investigated in two typical Chinese soils,an Acrisol(a variable-charge soil) and a Phaeozem(a constant-charge soil).Their thermodynamics and some of the factors influencing them(i.e.,initial pH value,ionic strength and phosphate) were also evaluated using the batch method in order to understand the environmental fate of DPAA in soils.The results indicate that Acrisol had a stronger adsorption capacity for DPAA than Phaeozem.Soil DPAA adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process and the amount of DPAA adsorbed was affected significantly by variation in soil pH and phosphate.In contrast,soil organic matter and ionic strength had no significant effect on adsorption.This suggests that DPAA adsorption may be due to specific adsorption on soil mineral surfaces.Therefore,monitoring the fate of DPAA in soils is recommended in areas contaminated by leakage from chemical weapons. | Anan Wang Shixin Li Ying Teng Wuxin Liu Longhua Wu Haibo Zhang Yujuan Huang Yongming Luo Peter Christie | 2013 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,6: | 8 |
