| 1 | Efficacy and safety of metformin and sitagliptin based triple antihyperglycemic therapy(STRATEGY):a multicenter,randomized,controlled,non-inferiority clinical trial显示文摘Despite the current guideline's recommendation of a timely stepwise intensification therapy,the 'clinical inertia',termed as the delayed treatment intensification,commonly exists in the real world,which may be partly due to the relatively little substantial evidence and no clear consensus regarding the efficacy and safety of triple oral agents in patients inadequately controlled with dual therapy.In this clinical trial performed in 237 centers in China,5,535 type 2 diabetic patients inadequately controlled by previous therapies were treated with a stable metformin/sitagliptin dual therapy for 20 weeks.The patients who did not reach the glycated hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) goal were then further randomized into glimepiride,gliclazide,repaglinide,or acarbose group for an additional 24-week triple therapy.A mean HbAlc reduction of 0.85%was observed when sitagliptin was added to the patients inadequately controlled with metformin in 16 weeks.Further HbAlc reductions in the 24-week triple therapy stage were 0.65%in glimepiride group,0.70%in gliclazide group,0.61%in repaglinide group,and 0.45%in acarbose group.The non-inferiority criterion for primary hypotheses was met for gliclazide and repaglinide,but not for acarbose,compared with glimepiride,when added to metformin/sitagliptin dual therapy.The incidences of adverse events(AEs) were 29.2%in the dual therapy stage and30.3%in the triple therapy stage.Metformin/sitagliptin as baseline therapy,with the addition of a third oral antihyperglycemic agent,including glimepiride,gliclazide,repaglinide,or acarbose,was effective,safe and well-tolerated for achieving an HbAlc<7.0%goal in type 2 diabetic patients inadequately controlled with previous therapies.The timely augmentation of up to three oral antihyperglycemic agents is valid and of important clinical benefit to prevent patients from exposure to unnecessarily prolonged hyperglycemia. | Wen Xu Yiming Mu Jiajun Zhao Dalong Zhu Qiuhe Ji Zhiguang Zhou Bin Yao Anhua Mao Samuel S.Engel Bin Zhao Yan Bi Longyi Zeng Xingwu Ran Juming Lu Linong Ji Wenying Yang Weiping Jia Jianping Weng | 2017 | Science China(Life Sciences)2017,60,3: | 19 |

| 3 | Investigation into the Formation, Structure, and Evolution of an EF4 Tornado in East China Using a High-Resolution Numerical Simulation显示文摘Devastating tornadoes in China have received growing attention in recent years, but little is known about their formation, structure, and evolution on the tornadic scale. Most of these tornadoes develop within the East Asian monsoon regime, in an environment quite different from tornadoes in the U.S. In this study, we used an idealized, highresolution(25-m grid spacing) numerical simulation to investigate the deadly EF4(Enhanced Fujita scale category 4)tornado that occurred on 23 June 2016 and claimed 99 lives in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. A tornadic supercell developed in the simulation that had striking similarities to radar observations. The violent tornado in Funing County was reproduced, exceeding EF4(74 ms–1), consistent with the on-site damage survey. It was accompanied by a funnel cloud that extended to the surface, and exhibited a double-helix vorticity structure. The signal of tornado genesis was found first at the cloud base in the pressure perturbation field, and then developed both upward and downward in terms of maximum vertical velocity overlapping with the intense vertical vorticity centers. The tornado's demise was found to accompany strong downdrafts overlapping with the intense vorticity centers. One of the interesting findings of this work is that a violent surface vortex was able to be generated and maintained, even though the simulation employed a free-slip lower boundary condition. | 4 | Regional eco-efficiency evaluation and spatial pattern analysis of the Yangtze River Economic Zone显示文摘The environmental ecology of the Yangtze River Economic Zone(YREZ)faces ecological function decline,deterioration and degradation under intense human activities,long-term development and utilization and its economy has developed rapidly over recent decades.Eco-efficiency is considered as a measure of coordinated development of economy,resources,environment and ecology,and is currently considered a very important issue.In this paper,based on the slack-based measure and data envelope analysis model,we take 129 prefecture-level cities of the YREZ as the study unit and measure the eco-efficiency of the YREZ in 2000,2005,2010 and 2015,which considers undesired output.The evaluation of the status quo of the regional eco-efficiency development was carried out at provincial,prefectural and city scales.The spatial autocorrelation test model and standard deviation ellipse were used to analyze the spatially distributed characteristics and the evolutionary regularity of eco-efficiency.Our study suggested that the eco-efficiency value varied significantly at different spatiotemporal scales and the overall distribution presented an'N-shaped'pattern,the value is the largest downstream and the smallest upstream.Regional eco-efficiency presented certain volatility in growth and a clear spatial positive agglomeration trend from 2000 to 2015.The spatial distribution of each agglomeration area was also significantly different,forming some high-high agglomeration areas at the center of the shaft with Shanghai and surrounding cities,and some low-low agglomeration areas at the center with middle reaches and upstream cities.The low-high over-aggregation and high-low polarization clusters were fewer.At the same time,with the change of the research period,the degree of positive agglomeration became increasingly pronounced and the eco-efficiency gap of the neighborhoodunit reduced.The regional eco-efficiency value of the YREZ presented a spatial distribution pattern in the northeast-southwest axis and the evolutionary pattern of the regional eco-efficiency similarly showed a northeast-southwest orientation. | HA Lin TU Jianjun YANG Jianping XU Chunhai PANG Jiaxing LU Debin YAO Zuolin ZHAO Wenyu | 2020 | Journal of Geographical Sciences2020,30,7: | 8 |

| 8 | Effects of Salinity on Embryonic Development, Survival, and Growth of Crassostrea hongkongensis显示文摘This study examined the effects of salinity on embryonic development, survival, and growth of the Hong Kong oyster Crassostrea hongkongensis. The embryos, larvae, and juveniles of C. hongkongensis were held in artificial seawater at three different salinities(low, 15; medium, 23; and high, 30) to determine the optimum hatchery and nursery conditions for mass production of the seeds. Results showed that the percentage production of straight-hinged larvae from fertilized eggs was significantly lower at the high salinity than at the low- and medium-salinities(P < 0.05). The survival rates of larvae and juveniles differed significantly among the three salinity trials, with the highest survival rate observed at the low salinity(P < 0.05). The shell height of larvae was significantly larger at the low salinity than at the high and medium salinities from days 9 to 15(P < 0.05), whereas that of juveniles was significantly larger at the low salinity than at the high and medium salinities on day 70(P < 0.05). These results indicate that the larvae and juveniles of C. hongkongensis are tolerant to a wide range of salinities(15 to 30), but show better growth and survival at relatively low salinities. | 9 | Insulin requirement profiles and related factors of insulin pump therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes显示文摘Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion(CSII)is an effective therapy to control hyperglycemia in both patients with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.However,there is little data investigating the insulin dose setting during CSII therapy in type 2 diabetes to achieve optimal glycemic control and avoid the risk of hypoglycemia.Thus,this study is aimed to assess the dose characteristics of insulin requirement and explore the related clinical factors in patients with type 2 diabetes who were treated with CSII.A total of 327 patients(195 males)aged 52.9±12.5 years old were included in this study.Patients were treated with CSII to achieve the target fasting capillary blood glucose(4.4-7.0 mmol L^(-1))and 2-h postprandial capillary blood glucose(4.4-10.0 mmol L^(-1))by adjusting insulin infusion according to the seven-point capillary blood glucose profiles.Total daily insulin dose(TDD),total daily insulin dose per kilogram(TDD kg-1)and the ratio of total basal insulin dose(TBD)to TDD(%TBa)were calculated after patients achieved the glucose targets for at least 3 days via 1-2 weeks of CSII treatment.And insulin dose,insulin dosing patterns and the relevant clinical factors were analyzed.The mean ratio of basal/bolus insulin distribution of all patients was 40%:60%.Patients with central obesity needed more TDD(51.3±17.1 U versus 43.5±14.0 U,P<0.05)and TDD kg^(-1)(0.8±0.3 U kg^(-1)versus 0.7±0.2 U kg^(-1),P<0.05)than those without central obesity.Pearson's correlation analysis demonstrated that TDD was positively correlated with body mass index(BMI),waist circumference(WC),baseline fasting plasma glucose(FPG),fasting C-peptide level,2 h-postprandial C-peptide level and time to achieve glycemic target(all P<0.05);TDD kg^(-1)was positively correlated with waist-to-hip ratio(WHR),baseline FPG,glycosylated hemoglobin Ale(HbAlc),fasting C-peptide level and time to achieve glycemic target,and negatively correlated with BMI(all P<0.05).Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that BMI(β=1.796,P<0.01),WC(β=0.109,P<0.01),baseline FPG(β=1.459,P<0.01)and HbAlc(β=0.930,P=0.021)were independently related to TDD.Gender(β=-0.107,P=0.003),WC(β=0.005,P=0.029),baseline FPG(β=0.025,P<0.01)and HbAlc(β=0.016,β=0.007)were independently associated with TDD kg^(-1).Gender(β=-0.015,P=0.048)and disease duration(β=0.134,P=0.029)were independently associated with%TBa.%TBa is around 40%in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes treated with CSII when glycemic control is achieved.In addition to body weight or BMI,WC and glucose levels before CSII should be considered to set TDD.Patients with central obesity or poor glycemic control might need more TDD.Higher%TBa should be considered in female patients or patients with longer disease duration. | Xubin Yang Hongrong Deng Xiuzhen Zhang Daizhi Yang Jinhua Yan Bin Yao Jianping Weng Wen Xu | 2019 | Science China(Life Sciences)2019,62,11: | 6 |
| 10 | The oxygen cycle and a habitable Earth显示文摘As an important contributor to the habitability of our planet, the oxygen cycle is interconnected with the emergence and evolution of complex life and is also the basis to establish Earth system science. Investigating the global oxygen cycle provides valuable information on the evolution of the Earth system, the habitability of our planet in the geologic past, and the future of human life. Numerous investigations have expanded our knowledge of the oxygen cycle in the fields of geology,geochemistry, geobiology, and atmospheric science. However, these studies were conducted separately, which has led to onesided understandings of this critical scientific issue and an incomplete synthesis of the interactions between the different spheres of the Earth system. This review presents a five-sphere coupled model of the Earth system and clarifies the core position of the oxygen cycle in Earth system science. Based on previous research, this review comprehensively summarizes the evolution of the oxygen cycle in geological time, with a special focus on the Great Oxidation Event(GOE) and the mass extinctions, as well as the possible connections between the oxygen content and biological evolution. The possible links between the oxygen cycle and biodiversity in geologic history have profound implications for exploring the habitability of Earth in history and guiding the future of humanity. Since the Anthropocene, anthropogenic activities have gradually steered the Earth system away from its established trajectory and had a powerful impact on the oxygen cycle. | 11 | Time correction of the ocean bottom seismometers deployed at the southwest Indian ridge using ambient noise cross-correlation显示文摘Seismic monitoring using ocean bottom seismometers(OBS) is an efficient method for investigating earthquakes in mid-ocean ridge far away from land. Clock synchronization among the OBSs is difficult without direct communication because electromagnetic signals cannot propagate efficiently in water. Time correction can be estimated through global positioning system(GPS) synchronization if clock drift is linear before and after the deployment. However, some OBSs in the experiments at the southwest Indian ridge(SWIR) on the Chinese DY125-34 cruise had not been re-synchronized from GPS after recovery. So we attempted to estimate clock drift between each station pairs using time symmetry analysis(TSA) based on ambient noise cross-correlation. We tested the feasibility of the TSA method by analyzing daily noise cross-correlation functions(NCFs) that extract from the data of another OBS experiment on the Chinese DY125-40 cruise with known clock drift and the same deployment site. The results suggest that the NCFs' travel time of surface wave between any two stations are symmetrical and have an opposite growing direction with the date. The influence of different band-pass filters,different components and different normalized methods was discussed. The TSA method appeared to be optimal for the hydrophone data within the period band of 2–5 s in dozens of km-scale interstation distances. A significant clock drift of ~2 s was estimated between OBSs sets through linear regression during a 108-d deployment on the Chinese cruise DY125-34. | 13 | Valence state manipulation of Sm3+ ions via a phase-shaped femtosecond laser field显示文摘The ability to manipulate the valence state conversion of rare-earth ions is crucial for their applications in color displays, optoelectronic devices, laser sources, and optical memory. The conventional femtosecond laser pulse has been shown to be a well-established tool for realizing the valence state conversion of rare-earth ions, although the valence state conversion efficiency is relatively low. Here, we first propose a femtosecond laser pulse shaping technique for improving the valence state conversion efficiency of rare-earth ions. Our experimental results demonstrate that the photoreduction efficiency from Sm^(3+) to Sm^(2+) in Sm^(3+)-doped sodium aluminoborate glass using a π phase step modulation can be comparable to that using a transform-limited femtosecond laser field, while the peak laser intensity is decreased by about 63%, which is very beneficial for improving the valence state conversion efficiency under the laser-induced damage threshold of the glass sample. The system is implemented by temporally modulating a specially shaped MWL followed by a suitable linear dispersive medium. A microwave dispersion value up to 1.33 ns/GHz over several GHz bandwidth is achieved based on this approach. Here we demonstrate a singleshot compression for different linearly chirped microwave signals over several GHz bandwidth. | 16 | Precipitation and seasonality affect grazing impacts on herbage nutritive values in alpine meadows on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau显示文摘Aims Grasslands used for animal husbandry are chosen depending on the nutritive values of dominant herbage species.However,the influence of grazing in combination with precipitation and growing season on the nutritive values of dominant species has not been explicated.Methods To unveil the influence of the different grazing intensities on the nutritional values,an ecological study was formulated,namely fencing(G0),light grazing(G1),moderate grazing(G2)and high grazing(G3).This ambitious study was undertaken on the nutritive values of the four dominant species of herbage in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP)during growing season(June–September)for two successive years,namely 2015(rainy year)and 2016(droughty year).Important Findings We found that(i)the nutritive value of Kobresia capillifolia,Polygonum viviparum and Caragana sinica was noticeably increased by grazing,but negligible effect on Potentilla fruticosa nutritive value was recorded.(ii)During the rainy year(2015),compared with G0,Polygonum viviparum and Potentilla fruticosa displayed 5.4 and 1.5%increases in the crude protein(CP)content and 8.5 and 2.4%increases in vitro true digestibility(IVTD),respectively,while the neutral detergent fibre(NDF)decreased by 13.5 and 0.9%,respectively.During the droughty year(2016),compared with G0,C.sinica and Potentilla fruticosa showed increases in the CP content by 4.3 and 1.3%and increases in the IVTD by 10.7 and 0.4%,respectively,during G3,while the NDF decreased by 6.0 and 1.0%,respectively.(iii)The nutritive values of all species were higher in the years when the rains were good.However,the nutritive values suffered heavily during drought conditions.Besides,the highest and lowest values of nutrition were detected in June and in September,respectively.The inter-seasonal and the inter-annual changes in the nutritional values of species were higher for K.capillifolia and Polygonum viviparum than for Potentilla fruticosa and C.sinica,suggesting that Potentilla fruticosa and C.sinica had higher water-use efficiency.(iv)Grazing clearly reduced the drought tolerance of three species and showed no effects on Potentilla fruticosa.(v)Grazing clearly increased the inter-month variation in the nutritional value of K.capillifolia and Polygonum viviparum but showed no effects on Potentilla fruticosa or C.sinica.Evidently,the grazing effects impacting the nutritional value of the dominant species of herbage exhibited conspicuous inter-annual and seasonal variations with species-specific influences and responses.Our findings are expected to have far-reaching implications enabling the authorities to arrive at strategic decisions and designing of relevant policies for the efficient management of the ecosystems ensuring the speed restoration of the QTP under severe grazing and extreme climatic circumstances. | Xixi Yao Jianping Wu Xuyin Gong | 2019 | Journal of Plant Ecology2019,12,6: | 3 |

Then, a type of permeable graded gravel is proposed, suitable for high-speed railway subgrade. A series of in-door water retention, permeability, and frost heave tests were performed under different graded conditions. Water retention, permeability, and frost heave characteristic of different graded filling materials can be determined, in order to define the gradation range of permeable graded gravel. Relying on the frost-heave monitoring record of high speed railway in Northeast China, a series of experimental studies were performed, which included on-site filler production, compaction test, and the anti-frost effect test, in order to improve the production and compaction techniques of permeable graded gravel.
