1Global warming, human-induced carbon emissions, and their uncertainties显示文摘In recent decades, there have been a number of debates on climate warming and its driving forces. Based on an extensive literature review, we suggest that (1) climate warming occurs with great uncertainty in the magnitude of the temperature increase; (2) both human activities and natural forces contribute to climate change, but their relative contributions are difficult to quantify; and (3) the dominant role of the increase in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases (including CO 2 ) in the global warming claimed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is questioned by the scientific communities because of large uncertainties in the mechanisms of natural factors and anthropogenic activities and in the sources of the increased atmospheric CO 2 concentration. 2Terrestrial carbon sinks in China and around the world and their contribution to carbon neutrality显示文摘Enhancing the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink(referred to as terrestrial C sink) is an important way to slow down the continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality target.To better understand the characteristics of terrestrial C sinks and their contribution to carbon neutrality,this review summarizes major progress in terrestrial C budget researches during the past decades,clarifies spatial patterns and drivers of terrestrial C sources and sinks in China and around the world,and examines the role of terrestrial C sinks in achieving carbon neutrality target.According to recent studies,the global terrestrial C sink has been increasing from a source of (-0.2±0.9) Pg C yr^(-1)(1 Pg=1015g)in the 1960s to a sink of (1.9±1.1) Pg C yr^(-1) in the 2010s.By synthesizing the published data,we estimate terrestrial C sink of 0.20–0.25 Pg C yr^(-1) in China during the past decades,and predict it to be 0.15–0.52 Pg C yr^(-1) by 2060.The terrestrial C sinks are mainly located in the mid-and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere,while tropical regions act as a weak C sink or source.The C balance differs much among ecosystem types:forest is the major C sink;shrubland,wetland and farmland soil act as C sinks;and whether the grassland functions as C sink or source remains unclear.Desert might be a C sink,but the magnitude and the associated mechanisms are still controversial.Elevated atmospheric CO_(2) concentration,nitrogen deposition,climate change,and land cover change are the main drivers of terrestrial C sinks,while other factors such as fires and aerosols would also affect ecosystem C balance.The driving factors of terrestrial C sink differ among regions.Elevated CO_(2) concentration and climate change are major drivers of the C sinks in North America and Europe,while afforestation and ecological restoration are additionally important forcing factors of terrestrial C sinks in China.For future studies,we recommend the necessity for intensive and long-term ecosystem C monitoring over broad geographic scale to improve terrestrial biosphere models for accurately evaluating terrestrial C budget and its dynamics under various climate change and policy scenarios.Yuanhe Yang Yue Shi Wenjuan Sun Jinfeng Chang Jianxiao Zhu Leiyi Chen Xin Wang Yanpei Guo Hongtu Zhang Lingfei Yu Shuqing Zhao Kang Xu Jiangling Zhu Haihua Shen Yuanyuan Wang Yunfeng Peng Xia Zhao Xiangping Wang Huifeng Hu Shiping Chen Mei Huang Xuefa Wen Shaopeng Wang Biao Zhu Shuli Niu Zhiyao Tang Lingli Liu Jingyun Fang 2022Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,5:32
3Simulated and reconstructed winter temperature in the eastern China during the last millennium显示文摘The reconstructed temperature anomalies in the eastern China were compared with the output from a 1000-year model simulation in an attempt to evaluate the model’s regional simulation skills and to understand the causes of climate change in China over the last millennium. The reconstructed data are the winter half-year temperature anomalies in the central region of eastern China (25°-40°N, east of 105°E) for the last 1000 years with a 30-year resolu- tion. The model used is the global atmosphere-ocean coupled climate model, ECHO-G, which was driven by time-varying external forcings including solar radiation, volcanic erup- tions, and greenhouse gas concentrations (CO2 and CH4) for the same period. The correlation coefficient between the simulated and reconstructed time series is 0.37, which is sta- tistically significant at a confidence level of 97.5%. The Me- dieval Warm Period (MWP) during 1000-1300 A.D., the Little Ice Age (LIA) during 1300-1850 A.D. and the modern warming period after 1900 A.D. are all recognizable from both the simulated and reconstructed temperatures. The anomalies associated with the LIA and the modern warming simulated by the model are in good consistency with the re- constructed counterpart. In particular during the Maunder sun-spot minimum (1670-1710 A.D.), both the simulated and reconstructed temperature anomalies reach their min- ima without any phase difference. But in the earlier MWP, significant discrepancies exist between the simulation and the reconstruction, which might reflect the degrading quality of the reconstruction data. The range of the simulated anoma- lies (1.62 K) is comparable with that of reconstructed (2.0 K). Diagnosis of the model results indicates that, during the last millennium, variations in solar radiation and volcanic activ- ity are the main controlling factors on regional temperature change, while in the recent 100 years, the change of the con- centration of greenhouse gases plays most important role in explaining the rapid temperature rising.LIU Jian H. 4Climate and litter C/N ratio constrain soil organic carbon accumulation显示文摘Soil organic carbon(SOC) plays critical roles in stabilizing atmospheric CO2 concentration, but the mechanistic controls on the amount and distribution of SOC on global scales are not well understood. In turn, this has hampered the ability to model global C budgets and to find measures to mitigate climate change. Here, based on the data from a large field survey campaign with 2600 plots across China’s forest ecosystems and a global collection of published data from forested land, we find that a low litter carbon-to-nitrogen ratio(C/N) and high wetness index(P/PET, precipitation-to-potentialevapotranspiration ratio) are the two factors that promote SOC accumulation, with only minor contributions of litter quantity and soil texture. The field survey data demonstrated that high plant diversity decreased litter C/N and thus indirectly promoted SOC accumulation by increasing the litter quality. We conclude that any changes in plant-community composition, plant-species richness and environmental factors that can reduce the litter C/N ratio, or climatic changes that increase wetness index, may promote SOC accumulation. 5Regional differences in the timing of recent air warming during the past four decades in China显示文摘Global surface temperature has dramatically increased in the past decades.It is critical to evaluate such a change using appropriate approaches.The previous studies for assessment of the change usually used overall trends of temperature series(i.e.slopes of simple linear regression of temperature versus year based on a least-square analysis) for entire study period.Temperature trends,however,differ among different periods,i.e.there are often breakpoints in the temperature series.Therefore,the overall linear trend of a temperature series may conceal some of the temporal characteristics of the temperature change.To precisely characterize the temporal and spatial patterns of air temperature change in China,we analyze the annual mean temperature series between the year of 1961?2004 for 536 meteorological stations across China,using piecewise linear regression approach.We found remarkable breakpoints in the annual mean temperature during the study period across the country.The annual mean temperature started to increase in 1984 at a rate of 0.058°C/a at the country level.The year when warming started appeared to be gradually later from the north to the south:temperature increased since the 1970s in the north(north of 40°N),and did not rise until the 1980s in most areas of the south(south of 40°N),with warming starting in 1983 in the Tibetan Plateau.The trends in annual mean temperatures showed a large spatial heterogeneity across China:a relatively small rising with a rate of 0.025-0.05°C/a in the Sichuan Basin,Central China and South China;the greatest increase in some parts of northwest China(i.e.Xinjiang) with up to a rate of 0.1°C/a;and rising at a rate of >0.05°C/a for most regions of the country.The feedbacks of cold waves and snow may be responsible for such regional differences in the timing and rates of warming in China.WANG ShaoPeng WANG ZhiHeng PIAO ShiLong FANG JingYun 2010Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,19:18
6Carbon budgets of three temperate forest ecosystems in Dongling Mt.,Beijing,China显示文摘There is a general agreement that forest ecosystems in the Northern Hemisphere function as signifi-cant sinks for atmospheric CO2; however, their magnitude and distribution remain large uncertainties. In this paper, we report the carbon (C) stock and its change of vegetation, forest floor detritus, and mineral soil, annual net biomass increment and litterfall production, and respiration of vegetation and soils between 1992 to 1994, for three temperate forest ecosystems, birch (Betula platyphylla) forest, oak (Quercus liaotungensis) forest and pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) plantation in Mt. Dongling, Beijing, China. We then evaluate the C budgets of these forest ecosystems. Our results indicated that total C density (organic C per hectare) of these forests ranged from 250 to 300 t C ha-1, of which 35―54 t C ha-1 from vegetation biomass C and 209―244 t C ha-1 from soil organic C (1 m depth, including forest floor detritus). Biomass C of all three forests showed a net increase, with 1.33―3.55 t C ha-1 a-1 during the study period. Litterfall production, vegetation autotrophic respiration, and soil heterotrophic respira-tion were estimated at 1.63―2.34, 2.19―6.93, and 1.81―3.49 t C ha-1 a-1, respectively. Ecosystem gross primary production fluctuated between 5.39 and 12.82 t C ha-1 a-1, about half of which (46%―59%, 3.20―5.89 t C ha-1 a-1) was converted to net primary production. 7Agriculture Development-induced Surface Albedo Changes and Climatic Implications Across Northeastern China显示文摘To improve the understandings on regional climatic effects of past human-induced land cover changes,the surface albedo changes caused by conversions from natural vegetation to cropland were estimated across northeastern China over the last 300 years,and its climatic effects were simulated by using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model.Essential natural vegetation records compiled from historical documents and regional optimal surface albedo dataset were used.The results show that the surface albedo decreased by 0.01-0.03 due to conversions from grassland to cropland in the Northeast China Plain and it increased by 0.005-0.015 due to conversions from forests to cropland in the surrounding mountains.As a consequence,in the Northeast China Plain,the surface net radiation increased by 4-8 W/m 2,2-5 W/m 2,and 1-3 W/m 2,and the climate was therefore warmed by 0.1℃-0.2℃、0.1℃-0.2℃、 0.1℃-0.3 ℃ in the spring,autumn and winter,respectively.In the surrounding mountain area,the net radiation decreased by less than 1.5 W/m 2,and the climate was therefore cooled too slight to be detected.In summer,effects of surface albedo changes on climate were closely associated with moisture dynamics,such as evapotranspiration and cloud,instead of being merely determined by surface radiation budget.The simulated summer climatic effects have large uncertainties.These findings demonstrate that surface albedo changes resulted in warming climate effects in the non-rainy seasons in Northeast China Plain through surface radiation processes while the climatic effects in summer could hardly be concluded so far.ZHANG Xuezhen WANG Wei-Chyung FANG Xiuqi YE Yu ZHENG Jingyun 2012Chinese Geographical Science2012,22,3:15

9Major advances in studies of the physical geography and living environment of China during the past 70 years and future prospects显示文摘The natural environment provides material essentials for human survival and development. The characteristics,processes, regional differentiation and forcing mechanisms of the elements of the natural environment(e.g. geomorphology,climate, hydrology, soil, etc.) are the main objects of research in physical geography. China has a complex natural environment and huge regional differentiation and therefore it provides outstanding reserach opportunities in physical geography. This review summarizes the most important developments and the main contributions of research in the physical geography and human living environment in China during the past 70 years. The major topics addressed are the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the evolution of its cryosphere, the development of fluvial systems, the acidification of the vast arid region of the Asian interior, variations in the monsoon and westerly climate systems on multiple timescales, the development of lakes and wetlands, the watershed system model, soil erosion, past human-environment interactions, biogeography, and physical geographic zonality. After briefly introducing international research developments, we review the history of research in physical geography in China, focusing on the major achievements and major academic debates, and finally we summarize the status of current research and the future prospects. 12Scenario analysis on the global carbon emissions reduction goal proposed in the declaration of the 2009 G8 Summit显示文摘A goal of a 50% reduction in global greenhouse gases emissions by 2050, with an 80% reduction by developed countries (hereafter referred to as the G8 Goal), was proposed at the G8 Summit held in L’Aquila, Italy, in July 2009. Here we analyze the scientific and political implications of the G8 Goal and its equity and feasibility by examining four greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. Our results show that (1) the goal to keep atmospheric CO2 concentration of <450 ppmv, stated by G8 nations, can only be achieved under the scenario of a steady, linear emissions reduction by all countries and simultaneously meeting the G8 Goal during the period 2005-2050; (2) under the G8 Goal, the carbon emissions quota for developing countries would not meet their carbon emission demands even if very strict reduction regimes are followed, with a gap of up to >1/3 of emissions demand in the next 45 years; and (3) under the G8 Goal, the cumulative per capita emissions during the period of 2006-2050 for developed and developing countries will be 81 t C and 40-47 t C, respectively, with the former doubling that of the latter, implying that the historical disparity of carbon emissions between developed and developing countries would be widened. Historically, the cumulative per capita emissions from developed countries are 12 times of those from developing countries. We therefore conclude that (1) the G8 Goal seeks to impose binding reduction targets on developing countries that will impede their industrialization process and cause conflicts among developing countries in the allocation of carbon emission rights; (2) the G8 Goal will not only widen the existing disparities of historical carbon emissions between developed and developing countries, but also generate new inequalities in the rights of carbon emissions; and (3) the 450 ppmv threshold of atmospheric CO2 concentration control, which is the basis for the G8 Goal, is impractical and impossible, and should not be accepted as the foundation for international climate negotiation on carbon emission reduction. 14Hippocampal ischemia causes deficits in local field potential and synaptic plasticity显示文摘The long-term enhancement in glutamate receptor mediated excitatory responses has been observed in stroke model.This pathological form of plasticity,termed post-ischemic long-term potentiation(i-LTP),points to functional reorganization after stroke.Little is known,however,about whether and how this i-LTP would affect subsequent induction of synaptic plasticity.Here,we first directly confirmed that i-LTP was induced in the endothelin-1-induced ischemia model as in other in vitro models.We also demonstrated increased expression of NR2 B,CaMKII and p-CaMKⅡ,which are reminiscent of i-LTP.We further induced LTP of field excitatory postsynaptic potentials(fEPSPs) on CA1 hippocampal neurons in peri-infarct regions of the endothelin-1-induced mini-stroke model.We found that LTP of fEPSPs,induced by high-frequency stimulation,displayed a progressive impairment at 12 and 24 hours after ischemia.Moreover,using in vivo multi-channel recording,we found that the local field potential,which represents electrical property of cell ensembles in more restricted regions,was also dampened at these two time points.These results suggest that i-LTP elevates the induction threshold of subsequent synaptic plasticity.Our data helps to deepen the knowledge of meta-synaptic regulation of plasticity after focal ischemia.Shaoli Wang Jingyun Zhang Tao Sheng Wei Lu Dengshun Miao 2015The Journal of Biomedical Research2015,29,5:8
15Spontaneous apoptosis of cells in therapeutic stem cell preparation exert immunomodulatory effects through release of phosphatidylserine显示文摘Mesenchymal stem cell(MSC)-mediated immunomodulation has been harnessed for the treatment of human diseases,but its underlying mechanism has not been fully understood.Dead cells,including apoptotic cells have immunomodulatory properties.It has been repeatedly reported that the proportion of nonviable MSCs in a MSC therapeutic preparation varied from 5-50%in the ongoing clinical trials.It is conceivable that the nonviable cells in a MSC therapeutic preparation may play a role in the therapeutic effects of MSCs.We found that the MSC therapeutic preparation in the present study had about 5%dead MSCs(DMSCs),characterized by apoptotic cells.Namely,1×10^(6) MSCs in the preparation contained about 5×10^(4) DMSCs.We found that the treatment with even 5×10^(4) DMSCs alone had the equal therapeutic effects as with 1×10^(6) MSCs.This protective effect of the dead MSCs alone was confirmed in four mouse models,including concanavalin A(ConA)-and carbon tetrachloride(CCI4)-induced acute liver injury,LPS-induced lung injury and spinal cord injury.We also found that the infused MSCs died by apoptosis in vivo.Furthermore,the therapeutic effect was attributed to the elevated level of phosphatidylserine(PS)upon the injection of MSCs or DMSCs.The direct administration of PS liposomes(PSLs)mimic apoptotic cell fragments also exerted the protective effects as MSCs and DMSCs.The Mer tyrosine kinase(MerTK)deficiency or the knockout of chemokine receptor C-C motif chemokine receptor 2(CCR2)reversed these protective effects of MSCs or DMSCs.These results revealed that DMSCs alone in the therapeutic stem cell preparation or the apoptotic cells induced in vivo may exert the same immunomodulatory property as the'living MSCs preparation'through releasing PS,which was further recognized by MerTK and participated in modulating immune cells.Xuemei He Weiqi Hong Jingyun Yang Hong Lei Tianqi Lu Cai He Zhenfei Bi Xiangyu Pan Yu Liu Lunzhi Dai Wei Wang Canhua Huang Hongxin Deng Xiawei Wei 2021Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2021,6,8:6
16Hedgehog signaling in gastrointestinal carcinogenesis and the gastrointestinal tumor microenvironment显示文摘The Hedgehog(HH) signaling pathway plays important roles in gastrointestinal carcinogenesis and the gastrointestinal tumor microenvironment(TME). Aberrant HH signaling activation may accelerate the growth of gastrointestinal tumors and lead to tumor immune tolerance and drug resistance.The interaction between HH signaling and the TME is intimately involved in these processes, for example, tumor growth, tumor immune tolerance, inflammation, and drug resistance. Evidence indicates that inflammatory factors in the TME, such as interleukin 6(IL-6) and interferon-g(IFN-g), macrophages, and T cell-dependent immune responses, play a vital role in tumor growth by affecting the HH signaling pathway. Moreover, inhibition of proliferating cancer-associated fibroblasts(CAFs) and inflammatory factors can normalize the TME by suppressing HH signaling. Furthermore, aberrant HH signaling activation is favorable to both the proliferation of cancer stem cells(CSCs) and the drug resistance of gastrointestinal tumors. 18Altitudinal patterns of stand structure and herb layer diversity of Picea schrenkiana forests in the central Tianshan Mountains,Northwest China显示文摘Altitude is a useful indicator to examine patterns of forest structure and species diversity in relation to environmental factors.In this study,the altitude patterns of forest stand structure and species diversity were analyzed across 20 plots in the Tianchi Nature Reserve,Northwest China.The results showed that mean stem height(Hm),maximum stem height(Hmax) and mean stem diameter at breast height(Dm) of Picea schrenkiana trees all decreased significantly with increasing altitude.Potential tree height(H*) decreased while stem taper increased significantly as altitude increased,suggesting remarkable altitudinal changes in biomass allocation between the diameter and height growth of Picea schrenkiana.Understory herbaceous richness increased significantly with increasing altitude,or with decreasing total basal area(TBA),Hm and stand volume(Volume).High light availability for understory herbs might account for the higher species richness at high altitude.Sorensen Index decreased significantly with the increase in altitude intervals,while the Cody Index demonstrated a converse pattern,suggesting greater differences in species composition with larger distances.LiPing LI XiangPing WANG Stefan ZERBE LiYun ZHANG JingYun FANG 2011Journal of Arid Land2011,3,4:3
19Surface disorder engineering in ZnCdS for cocatalyst free visible light driven hydrogen production显示文摘Metal chalcogenide solid solution,especially ZnCdS,has been intensively investigated in photocatalytic H_(2) generation due to their cost-effective synthetic procedure and adjustable band structures.In this work,we report on the defect engineering of ZnCdS with surface disorder layer by simple room temperature Li-ethylenediamine(Li-EDA)treatment.Experimental results confirm the formation of unusual Zn and S dual vacancies,where rich S vacancies(Vs)served as electron trapping sites,meanwhile Zn vacancies(Vzn)served as hole trapping sites.The refined structure significantly facilitates the photo charge carrier transfer and improves photocatalytic properties of ZnCdS.The disordered ZnCdS shows a highest photocatalytic H_(2) production rate of 33.6 mmol·g^(-1)·h^(-1) under visible light with superior photocatalytic stabilities,which is 7.3 times higher than pristine ZnCdS and 7 times of Pt(1 wt.%)loaded ZnCdS.Enna Ha Shuhong Ruan Danyang Li Yuanmin Zhu Yanping Chen Jiangyuan Qiu Zhaohui Chen Tingting Xu Jingyun Su Luyang Wang Junqing Hu 2022Nano Research2022,15,2:3
20A turn-on fluorescent probe for Au^(3+) based on rodamine derivative and its bioimaging application显示文摘A new fluorescent probe RY was synthesized for the detection of Au3+ions based on a rhodamine B derivative.The fluorescent probe showed good selectivity and sensitivity to Au3+ions.Obvious color and fluorescence changes could be observed with the naked eye while the fluorescent probe reacted with the Au3+ions.The detection limit of the probe was determined to be 36 ppb by the fluorescence titration.The excellent linear relationship suggests that the probe is potentially useful for quantitative detection of Au3+in vitro.We also demonstrated its bioimaging application in both living cells and mice.This was the first time that a fluorescent probe was successfully applied to imaging Au3+in living animals.SONG FengLing NING HouFu SHE HaiYing WANG JingYun PENG XiaoJun 2014Science China Chemistry2014,57,7:3
