| 1 | Application of LICOM to the numerical study of the water exchange between the South China Sea and its adjacent oceans显示文摘On the basis of 900-year integration of a global ocean circulation model—LICOM driven by ECMWF reanalysis wind data with uni-form 0.5°-grids, a quantitative estimate of the annual and monthly mean water exchange of the South China Sea (SCS) with its adjacentoceans through 5 straits is obtained. Among them, the annual transport is the largest in the Luzon Strait, then in the Taiwan Strait, andthen in the Sunda Shelf, in the Balabac Strait and in the Mindoro Strait in turn, the largest monthly transport variation appears in theLuzon Strait and Sunda shelf. It is shown that the mass transport through the Taiwan Strait is affected by monsoon, while the transportthrough the Luzon Strait may be associated with the bifurcation position of the North Equatorial Current off the east Philippines shore;the transports in the Luzon Strait and Sunda Shelf are out of phase in direction but well correlated in magnitude. The annual andmonthly mean heat and salinity exchange of the SCS through the straits are also calculated and shown to be in phase with the masstransport. The Kuroshio water carries about 0.43 PW heat transport and 151.33 kt/s salinity transport into the SCS, while most of themis carried out of the SCS through the Taiwan Strait and Sunda Shelf annually. The further model integration based on the 900-year inte-gration for another 44 a from 1958 to 2001 driven by real wind data (ERA40 data) shows that the monthly mean mass transport viathese straits varies annually with a large variation range, which may be associated with the seasonal and interannual variations in thecurrent field and sea surface height in the SCS. | 2 | Northern Tibetan Plateau cooling and aridification linked to Cenozoic global cooling:Evidence from n-alkane distributions of Paleogene sedimentary sequences in the Xining Basin显示文摘The Xining Basin on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau holds the longest continuous Cenozoic stratigraphic record in China.The sequence record contains considerable information on the history of Tibetan uplift and associated climatic change.In particular,high resolution n-alkane biomarker proxy and pollen records have been obtained from the Paleogene sediments of the Xiejia section of the basin.A combination of the n-alkane and palynological records reveals that the paleoclimate in the Xining Basin experienced a long-term cooling trend from 50.2 to 28.2 Ma with a distinctive ecological event spanning 37.5 to 32.7 Ma.Since this ecological event,a vertical zonation of vegetation from lowland arid grasses,to middle-elevation subtropical broad-leaf plants,to high-elevation coniferous trees was established.We interpret that these changes in climate and vegetation were probably responses to a combination of long term global cooling since the Eocene climatic optimum and uplift of the surrounding mountains on the northern Tibetan Plateau in the early Cenozoic. | LONG LiQun FANG XiaoMin MIAO YunFa BAI Yan WANG YongLi | 2011 | Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,15: | 15 |
| 3 | Background current affects the internal wave structure of the northern South China Sea显示文摘The internal wave modal equations are solved with the consideration of background currents. Analytical and numerical solutions of some speci c examples, including observations in the northern South China Sea (SCS), are obtained to investigate the e ect of back- ground current on internal wave vertical structure. The e ects of current shear and curvature on internal wave vertical structure are eval- uated separately. It is found that the phase speed and wave structure are modi ed by background currents, the current shear has little e ect on wave structure, whilst the current curvature could have a strong impact on the wave structure. The extent of the e ect by the current curvature on the wave structure depends on the magnitudes of current curvature, relative wave speed, and buoyancy frequency, sometimes the e ect by the current curvature may even cause the wave to attenuate severely with depth. A new method to obtain the real eigenfunction with depth in the case that the waves become evanescent is also put forward. | 4 | Major advances in studies of the physical geography and living environment of China during the past 70 years and future prospects显示文摘The natural environment provides material essentials for human survival and development. The characteristics,processes, regional differentiation and forcing mechanisms of the elements of the natural environment(e.g. geomorphology,climate, hydrology, soil, etc.) are the main objects of research in physical geography. China has a complex natural environment and huge regional differentiation and therefore it provides outstanding reserach opportunities in physical geography. This review summarizes the most important developments and the main contributions of research in the physical geography and human living environment in China during the past 70 years. The major topics addressed are the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the evolution of its cryosphere, the development of fluvial systems, the acidification of the vast arid region of the Asian interior, variations in the monsoon and westerly climate systems on multiple timescales, the development of lakes and wetlands, the watershed system model, soil erosion, past human-environment interactions, biogeography, and physical geographic zonality. After briefly introducing international research developments, we review the history of research in physical geography in China, focusing on the major achievements and major academic debates, and finally we summarize the status of current research and the future prospects. | 5 | Internal solitons in the northern South China Sea from insitu observations显示文摘In this paper, we demonstrate the characteris- tics of strong internal solitons at the southern edge of Dong- sha Islands in the northern South China Sea (SCS) during May―June 1998, using in situ time series data from the con- ductivity temperature depth (CTD), acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and thermistor chain. Our measurements indicated that the strongest internal solitons were larger than 90 m in wave amplitude, and propagated approximately westward in traveling direction, with the maximum current speed of about 2 m/s and the period of 10―20 min. | 6 | Internal tide characteristics over northern South China Sea continental slope显示文摘21-day in-situ ADCP current and CTD data from an anchored observational station by R/V Shiyan 3 are used to investigate the characteristics of internal tide in the northern South China Sea continental slope. The results show that tide and internal tide are both mixed type in the observed region and dominated by diurnals; the maximum internal tidal major axes of K1, O1 were largest and reached 11 cm/s, 10 cm/s, respectively, and their current vectors rotate anticlockwise. The 300 m-deep internal tide presents obvious quasi-diurnal oscillation and its average amplitude reaches 50 m. | 9 | Impact of warm mesoscale eddy on tropical cyclone intensity显示文摘The spatial-temporal patterns of tropical cyclone(TC) intensity changes caused by the warm ocean mesoscale eddy(WOME) distribution are evaluated using two sets of idealized numerical experiments. The results show that the TC was intensified and weakened when a WOME was close to and far away from the TC center, respectively.The area where the WOME enhanced(weakened) TC intensity is called the inner(outer) area in this study.Amplitudes of the enhancement and weakening caused by the WOME in the inner and outer area decreased and increased over time, while the ranges of the inner and outer area diminished and expanded, respectively. The WOME in the inner area strengthened the secondary circulation of the TC, increased heat fluxes, strengthened the symmetry, and weakened the outer spiral rainband, which enhanced TC intensity. The effect was opposite if the WOME was in the outer area, and it weakened the TC intensity. The idealized simulation employed a stationary TC, and thus the results may only be applied to TCs with slow propagation. | 12 | Existence, morphology and structure of the Yellow Sea Warm Current Branch approaching waters offshore Qingdao, China显示文摘In this study, we focused on full-region cruise survey data, near-bottom continuous mooring observations and sea surface wind products from the western South Yellow Sea in winter; after ensuring the data reliability and accuracy, we processed and analyzed the data. Image resolution experiments were carried out to determine the lowest recognition resolutions for all image types, which represent the resolution characteristics of the data. The existence of a warm water tongue originating from the Yellow Sea Warm Current(YSWC) that approached waters offshore Qingdao was confirmed. For the first time, a high salinity water tongue, corresponding to the warm water tongue, was described and found to be more representative of the YSWC branch path. This warm tongue is a sign of the branch originating from the YSWC, which we defined as the Yellow Sea Warm Current Branch approaching waters offshore Qingdao(YSWC-QDB). The pattern of the warm and salty water tongues showed remarkable rear, branching middle, shrinking neck and expanding top regions. These patterns showed a temporal feature of the tongues, and were the result of multi-temporal branches in front of the YSWC main section as well as the YSWC-QDB crossing the southwestward path of the extension of the North Shandong Coastal Current flowing along the southeast coast of the Shandong Peninsula(NSCC-SESE). Analysis using mooring data at a sensitive and representative station also showed the existence of the YSWC-QDB. It is a probabilistic event that manifests as a northwestward flow that decreases gradually from the bottom to the surface in the early cold air transit stage and consistent in the whole water column profile in the later stage. It varies quasi-periodically with weather processes. It also transports some of the YSWC water stored in the entrance area of the Bohai and Yellow seas under winter wind conditions to the western South Yellow Sea as a compensatory current. This current, caused by northerly winds, especially northwest winds and obstruction of the NSCC-SESE, was present, and strong water reduction and compensation caused significant residual sea level oscillations. The compensatory current, if caused by strong northwest wind,began to appear when its direction was opposite to the wind direction. In addition, confirmation of the YSWC-QDB provides an oceanographic basis for the short cooling time and rapid warming in the Qingdao area in winter. This research provides a basis for further studies of the YSWC-QDB at high spatial and temporal resolutions using large sea surface datasets. | 13 | Model study of the upper circulation in the Sulu Sea and its relation to the South China Sea circulation显示文摘According to the satellite remote sensing monthly mean sea surface temperature data from 1998 to 2002, it is shown that, the Sulu Sea is dominated by a cold eddy both in summer and winter. A coupled single-layer/two-layer model is employed here to study the summery and wintry characteristics and dynamic mechanism of the upper circulation in the Sulu Sea. According to the numerical experiments, it is found that, due to the local monsoon stress curl, the upper circulation in the Sulu Sea is dominated by a weak anticyclonic eddy in summer and a strong cyclonic eddy in winter. Once there is a large outflow via the Sibutu Passage flowing out of the Sulu Sea in summer, the upper circulation in the Sulu Sea may be dominated by a cyclonic eddy instead of the normal anticyclonic one. | 14 | Spring upper warm water of the Nansha Islands sea area in the South China Sea and the numerical study on its dynamic mechanism显示文摘According to the satellite remote sensing monthly mean sea surface temperature data and in situ observational Conductivity-Temperature-Depth data, it is shown that in spring, at the upper layer to the west of Palawan Island, there exists a relatively weak warm water tongue which is distinctly different from the cold water southeast of the Balabac Strait. The relative temperature difference between the warm and cold water reduces gradually from winter to spring. P-vector method is employed to calculate the current field based on the in situ observational data, which shows that the warm water is within an anti-cyclonic meander. Based on the remote sensing wind stress during the observational period, a coupled single-layer/two-layer model is employed to study the dynamic mechanism of this anticyclonic meander current field corresponding to the warm water tongue. | 16 | Alternations in the gut microbiota and metabolome with newly diagnosed unstable angina显示文摘Gut microbiota plays an important role in coronary heart disease, but its compositional and functional changes in unstable angina(UA) remain unexplored. We performed metagenomic sequencing of 133 newly diagnosed UA patients and 133 sex-and age-matched controls, and profiled the fecal and plasma metabolomes in 30 case-control pairs. The alpha diversity of gut microbiota was increased in UA patients:the adjusted odds ratios(ORs) per standard deviation increase in Shannon and Simpson indices were 1.30(95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.70) and 1.36(1.05-1.81), respectively. Two common species(depleted Klebsiella pneumoniae and enriched Streptococcus parasanguinis;P ≤ 0.002) and three rare species(depleted Weissella confusa, enriched Granulicatella adiacens and Erysipelotrichaceae bacterium 6_1_45;P ≤ 0.005) were associated with UA. The UA-associated gut microbiota was depleted in the pathway of Lphenylalanine degradation(P = 0.001), primarily contributed by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Consistently, we found increased circulating phenylalanine in UA patients(OR = 2.76 [1.17-8.16]). Moreover, Streptococcus parasanguinis was negatively correlated with fecal citrulline(Spearman's r_(s)=-0.470, P = 0.009), a metabolite depleted in UA patients(OR = 0.26 [0.08-0.63]). | 20 | Experimental Investigation on Liner Cooling Characteristics of a Mixed-Flow Trapped Vortex Combustor显示文摘The mixed-flow trapped vortex combustor(TVC)is a new type of combustor that applies trapped vortex flame stabilization technology to mixed-flow combustor.Compared with the traditional mixed-flow combustor,the mixed-flow TVC has many advantages,such as complicated structure of the vortex flow field inside liner,large cooling area,significant local hot spots on the liner,and large wall temperature gradient.In this paper,for a mixed-flow TVC with inclined multi-hole cooling,the liner wall temperature of an annular test rig was examined in experiments.The effects of inlet temperature(T3),inlet Mach number(Ma)and fuel to air ratio(FAR)on the temperature of liner wall were obtained,which provided a valuable reference for understanding the distribution characteristics of liner wall temperature.The experiment results show that the highest temperature is found to be on the fore-wall of the cavity.When T3 and FAR are low,the highest wall temperature was obtained in injector plane.However,the wall temperature in the center plane between two adjacent injectors was higher than that in injector plane under the condition of high FAR and T3.With the increase of FAR and T3,the average wall temperature increases.Ma has a slight impact on the average wall temperature.In addition,this paper provides an effective reference for the design and improvement of the liner cooling structure of the combustor with many discontinuous small-area walls in the flow direction.It is difficult to form a continuous film,and cooling requirements can’t be achieved only by using inclined multi-hole cooling structure.Consideration needs to be given to other efficient cooling structures,or to the combination of multiple cooling structures. | ZHANG Jingyu WANG Min WANG Long WANG Jiaxi JIANG Ping HE Xiaomin | 2023 | Journal of Thermal Science2023,32,6: | 0 |
