| 1 | Online monitoring of water-soluble ionic composition of PM_(10)during early summer over Lanzhou City显示文摘Lanzhou is one of the most aerosol-polluted cities in China. In this study, an online analyzer for Monitoring for AeRosols and GAses was deployed to measure major water-soluble inorganic ions in PM10 at 1-hour time resolution, and 923 samples were obtained from Apr 1 to May 24, 2011. During the field campaign, air pollution days were encountered with Air Quality Index more than 100 and daily average concentration of PM10 exceeding 150 μg/m3. Based on the variation of water-soluble ions and results of Positive Matrix Factorization 3.0 model execution, the air pollution days were classified as crustal species- or secondary aerosol-induced, and the different formation mechanisms of these two air pollution types were studied. During the crustal species pollution days, the content of Ca2+increased and was about 2.3 times higher than the average on clear days, and the air parcel back trajectory was used to analyze the sources of crustal species. Data on sulfate, trace gases and meteorological factors were used to reveal the formation mechanism of secondary aerosol pollution. | 3 | Evaluation of four final irrigation protocols for cleaning root canal walls显示文摘The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of four final irrigation protocols in smear layer removal and bacterial inhibition in root canal systems.Thirty roots inoculated with Enterococcus faecalis were prepared with ProTaper Universal files.The teeth were disinfected by conventional needle irrigation,sonic agitation using the EndoActivator device,passive ultrasonic irrigation,or an M3 Max file.Teeth with no root canal preparation served as blank controls for the establishment of the infection baseline.Teeth with preparation but no final irrigation served as a post-instrumentation baseline.After the final irrigation,the teeth were sectioned in half.One half of each tooth was examined by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)to assess smear layer removal using a five-point scale.The other half was examined by confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM)using the LIVE/DEAD BackLight bacterial viability kit to evaluate the depth of bacterial survival in dentinal tubules.SEM analysis revealed no significant difference in smear layer removal throughout the whole canal among the EA,PUI,and M3 Max groups(P>0.05).CLSM revealed that PUI achieved the greatest bacterial inhibition depth in the coronal((174.27±31.63)μm),middle((160.94±37.77)μm),and apical((119.53±28.49)μm)thirds of the canal(all P<0.05 vs.other groups).According to this comprehensive SEM and CLSM evaluation,PUI appears to have the best infection control ability in root canal systems. | Qiang Li Qian Zhang Xiaoying Zou Lin Yue | 2020 | International Journal of Oral Science2020,12,3: | 6 |

| 6 | 60-year changes and mechanisms of Urumqi Glacier No.1 in the eastern Tianshan of China,Central Asia显示文摘Worldwide examination of glacier change is based on detailed observations from only a small number of glaciers.The ground-based detailed individual glacier monitoring is of strong need and extremely important in both regional and global scales.A long-term integrated multi-level monitoring has been carried out on Urumqi Glacier No.1(UG1)at the headwaters of the Urumqi River in the eastern Tianshan Mountains of Central Asia since 1959 by the Tianshan Glaciological Station,Chinese Acamedey of Sciences(CAS),and the glaciological datasets promise to be the best in China.The boundaries of all glacier zones moved up,resulting in a shrunk accumulation area.The stratigraphy features of the snowpack on the glacier were found to be significantly altered by climate warming.Mass balances of UG1 show accelerated mass loss since 1960,which were attributed to three mechanisms.The glacier has been contracting at an accelerated rate since 1962,resulting in a total reduction of 0.37 km2 or 19.3%from 1962 to 2018.Glacier runoff measured at the UG1 hydrometeorological station demonstrates a significant increase from 1959 to 2018 with a large interannual fluctuation,which is inversely correlated with the glacier's mass balance.This study analyzes on the changes in glacier zones,mass balance,area and length,and streamflow in the nival glacial catchment over the past 60 years.It provides critical insight into the processes and mechanisms of glacier recession in response to climate change.The results are not only representative of those glaciers in the Tianshan mountains,but also for the continental-type throughout the world.The direct observation data form an essential basis for evaluating mountain glacier changes and the impact of glacier shrinkage on water resources in the interior drainage rivers within the vast arid and semi-arid land in northwestern China as well as Central Asia. | ZhongQin Li HuiLin Li ChunHai Xu YuFeng Jia FeiTeng Wang PuYu Wang XiaoYing Yue | 2020 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2020,12,6: | 2 |

| 8 | Case study of dust event sources from the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts:An investigation of the horizontal evolution and topographical effect using numerical modeling and remote sensing显示文摘A severe dust event occurred from April 23 to April 27, 2014, in East Asia. A state-of-the-art online atmospheric chemistry model, WRF/Chem, was combined with a dust model, GOCART,to better understand the entire process of this event. The natural color images and aerosol optical depth(AOD) over the dust source region are derived from datasets of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer(MODIS) loaded on a NASA Aqua satellite to trace the dust variation and to verify the model results. Several meteorological conditions, such as pressure, temperature, wind vectors and relative humidity, are used to analyze meteorological dynamic. The results suggest that the dust emission occurred only on April 23 and 24,although this event lasted for 5 days. The Gobi Desert was the main source for this event,and the Taklamakan Desert played no important role. This study also suggested that the landform of the source region could remarkably interfere with a dust event. | 10 | Spatiotemporal dynamics of ecosystem fires and biomass burning-induced carbon emissions in China over the past two decades显示文摘Fire is a major type of disturbance that has important influences on ecosystem dynamics and carbon cycles.Yet our understanding of ecosystem fires and their carbon cycle consequences is still limited,largely due to the difficulty of large-scale fire monitoring and the complex interactions between fire,vegetation,climate,and anthropogenic factors.Here,using data from satellite-derived fire observations and ecosystem model simulations,we performed a comprehensive investigation of the spatial and temporal dynamics of China’s ecosystem fire disturbances and their carbon emissions over the past two decades(1997–2016).Satellite-derived results showed that on average about 3.47-4.53×10^(4) km^(2) of the land was burned annually during the past two decades,among which annual burned forest area was about 0.81-1.25×10^(4) km^(2),accounting for 0.33-0.51%of the forest area in China.Biomass burning emitted about 23.02 TgC per year.Compared to satellite products,simulations from the Energy Exascale Earth System Land Model(ELM)strongly overestimated China’s burned area and fire-induced carbon emissions.Annual burned area and fire-induced carbon emissions were high for boreal forest in Northeast China’s Daxing’anling region and subtropical dry forest in South Yunnan,as revealed by both the satellite product and the model simulations.Our results suggest that climate and anthropogenic factors play critical roles in controlling the spatial and seasonal distribution of China’s ecosystem fire disturbances.Our findings highlight the importance of multiple complementary approaches in assessing ecosystem fire disturbance and its carbon consequences.Further studies are required to improve the methods of observing and modelling China’s ecosystem fire disturbances,which will provide valuable information for fire management and ecosystem sustainability in an era when both human activities and the natural environment are rapidly changing. | Anping Chen Rongyun Tang Jiafu Mao Chao Yue Xiran Li Mengdi Gao Xiaoying Shi Mingzhou Jin Daniel Ricciuto Sam Rabin Phillippe Ciais Shilong Piao | 2020 | Geography and Sustainability2020,1,1: | 1 |

| 14 | Partition-coordinated control of soil and water loss for chestnut forests in the Yanshan Mountain Region, China显示文摘Soil erosion from chestnut forests is one of the most important factors causing land degradation in the Yanshan Mountain Region. A 2-year field study was done to compare the effects on erosion of a control plot(CP), a repaired and maintained horizontal ditch built with an engineering baffle every 6 m(MP 1),and a repaired and maintained horizontal ditch built with an engineering baffle every 8 m(MP 2). The results showed that the slope runoff of chestnut forests was influenced by rainfall characteristic factors.No single rainfall characteristic factor showed dominance for hill slope runoff. The runoff reduction effect of the partition-coordinated erosion control measures(MP 1 and MP 2) was substantial for chestnut forests under high rainfall intensity conditions. However, the runoff reduction efficiency was higher under the conditions of heavy rainfall and low average rainfall intensity than for storms with higher intensity and lower total rainfall. The reduction effect of the partition-coordinated erosion control measures on the runoff and sediment yield of chestnut forest slopes was MP 2 > MP 1 > CP. The runoff reduction rate and erosion reduction rate of MP 2 reached 61.70% and 97.41%, respectively, and that for MP 1 was 54.15% and 85.31%, respectively.
