| 2 | Posterior scleral reinforcement for the treatment of pathological myopia显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effects of posterior scleral reinforcement(PSR) in the treatment of pathological myopia.·METHODS: The study included 52 eyes in 43 patients with pathological myopia who underwent PSR(PSR group), and 52 eyes in 36 age- and myopia-matched patients who did not undergo such treatment as control group. Axial length, refraction error, best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), and macular scans by optical coherence tomography(OCT) were recorded at baseline, 6mo, 1, 3and 5y after the surgery, and the complications were noted.·RESULTS: There were no statistical differences in axial length, refractive error, or BCVA between the PSR group and the control group at baseline. At the end of the follow-up, the mean axial length was 29.79 ±1.26 mm in the PSR group, which was significantly shorter than that in the control group(30.78±1.30 mm)(P <0.01), and the mean refractive error was-16.86 ±2.53 D in the PSR group, which was significantly lower than that in the control group(-19.18 ±2.12 D)(P <0.01). A statistically significant difference in BCVA was found between the PSR group(0.51 ±0.25 log MAR) and the control group(0.62±0.26 log MAR) at the postoperative 5-year follow-up(P <0.01). | 5 | Posterior scleral reinforcement combined with vitrectomy for myopic foveoschisis显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effects of posterior scleral reinforcement(PSR) combined with vitrectomy for myopic foveoschisis.· METHODS: Thirty-nine highly myopic eyes of 39 patients with myopic foveoschisis underwent PSR combined with vitrectomy. Best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), refraction error, and the foveal thickness by optical coherence tomography(OCT) were recorded before and after the surgery, and complications were noted.·RESULTS: The follow-up period was 12 mo, and the main focus was on the results of the 12-month follow-up visit. The mean preoperative BCVA was 0.96±0.43 log MAR.At the final follow-up visit, the mean BCVA was 0.46 ±0.28 log MAR, which significantly improved compared with the preoperative one(P =0.003). The BCVA improved in33 eyes(84.62%), and unchanged in 6 eyes(15.38%). At the end of follow- up, the mean refractive error was-15.13 ±2.55 D, and the improvement was significantly compared with the preoperative one(-17.53±4.51 D)(P =0.002). Twelve months after surgery, OCT showed complete resolution of the myopic foveoschisis and a reattachment of the fovea in 37 eyes(94.87%) and partial resolution in the remained two eyes(5.13%). The foveal thickness was obviously reduced at 12-month follow-up visit(196.45 ±36.35 μm) compared with the preoperative one(389.32±75.56 μm)(P =0.002). | 6 | A two-step lineage reprogramming strategy to generate functionally competent human hepatocytes from fibroblasts显示文摘Terminally differentiated cells can be generated by lineage reprogramming,which is,however,hindered by incomplete conversion with residual initial cell identity and partial functionality. Here, we demonstrate a new reprogramming strategy by mimicking the natural regeneration route, which permits generating expandable hepatic progenitor cells and functionally competent human hepatocytes. Fibroblasts were first induced into human hepatic progenitor-like cells (hHPLCs), which could robustly expand in vitro and efficiently engraft in vivo. Moreover, hHPLCs could be efficiently induced into mature human hepatocytes (hiHeps) in vitro, whose molecular identity highly resembles primary human hepatocytes (PHHs). Most importantly, hiHeps could be generated in large quantity and were functionally competent to replace PHHs for drug-metabolism estimation, toxicity prediction and hepatitis B virus infection modeling. Our results highlight the advantages of the progenitor stage for successful lineage reprogramming. | 10 | Effect of Weight Loss on Survival in Esophageal Cancer Patients undergoing Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy and Surgery显示文摘Objective This study aimed to determine the impact of weight loss during neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy on the survival of patients with esophageal carcinoma.Methods We retrospectively examined 102 consecutive patients with esophageal carcinoma who underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by radical resection at Sichuan Cancer Hospital&Institute between 2003 and 2017.The patients were divided into three groups based on the amount of body weight lost during neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy:severe weight loss(>10%),high weight loss(5%~10%),and low weight loss(<5%).The correlations of weight loss with toxicity,progressionfree survival,and overall survival were investigated.Results The median overall survival was 49.7 months in the low weight loss group compared with 35.4 and 25.1 months in the high and severe weight loss groups(P=0.041).The 1-year overall survival rates in the severe,high,and low weight loss groups were 62.5%,85.0%,and 90.7%,respectively;the corresponding 3-year overall survival rates were 21.9%,47.3%,and 68.8%,respectively,and the corresponding 5-year overall survival rates were 21.9%,31.0%,and 44.4%,respectively.The multivariate analysis indicated that a pathological complete response and severe weight loss were independent prognostic factors for overall survival.Any leukopenia(P=0.024),leukopenia of at least grade 3(P=0.021),and anemia(P=0.042)occurred more frequently in the severe weight loss group.Conclusions Weight loss during neoadjuvant CRT is an independent and adverse prognostic factor in esophageal carcinoma patients,whereas a stable weight confers a better prognosis. | Jia Hua Lyu Tao Li Yong Tao Han Lei Wu Lin Peng Qi Feng Wang Long Liang | 2020 | Journal of Nutritional Oncology2020,5,3: | 6 |

| 12 | Efficacy of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell transplantation therapy in patients with refractory diabetic peripheral neuropathy显示文摘Background:Owing to the multifactorial nature of the pathogenesis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN),conventional drug therapies have not been effective.The application of stem cells transplantation may be useful for the treatment of DPN.This study was designed to assess the safety and therapeutic effects of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) transplantation on the treatment of refractory DPN.Methods:One hundred and sixty-eight patients with refractory DPN were recruited and enrolled in the study.They received intramuscular injection of BMMNCs and followed at 1,3,6,12,18,24,and 36 months after the transplantation.Clinical data,Toronto Clinical Scoring System (TCSS),and nerve conduction studies (NCSs) were compared before and after the transplantation.Results:The signs and symptoms of neuropathy were significantly improved after BMMNCs transplantation.The values of the TCSS scores at 1 month (9.68 ± 2.49 vs.12.55 ± 2.19,P<0.001) and 3 months (8.47 ± 2.39 vs.12.55 ± 2.19,P<0.001) after the treatment reduced significantly compared with the baseline value.This decrement remained persistent until the end of the study.The conduction velocity and action potential and sensory nerves were significantly improved after transplantation (3 and 12 months after the treatment vs.the baseline:motor nerve conduction velocity,40.24 ± 2.80 and 41.00 ± 2.22 m/s vs.38.21 ± 2.28 m/s,P<0.001;sensory nerve conduction velocity,36.96 ± 2.26 and 39.15 ± 2.61 m/s vs.40.41 ± 2.22 m/s,P<0.001;compound muscle action potential,4.67 ± 1.05 and 5.50 ± 1.20 μV vs.5.68 ± 1.08 μV,P<0.001;sensory nerve action potential,4.29 ± 0.99 and 5.14 ± 1.26 μV vs.5.41 ± 1.14 μV,P<0.001).No adverse event associated with the treatment was observed during the follow-up period.Conclusions:Autologous transplantation of BMMNCs may be an effective and promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of refractory DPN. | Hong Mao Wei Wei Xiu-Li Fu Jing-Jian Dong Xiao-Yu Lyu Ting Jia Yang Tang Shi Zhao | 2019 | Chinese Medical Journal2019,,1: | 5 |

| 15 | Long-term variations of major atmospheric compositions observed at the background stations in three key areas of China显示文摘Atmospheric compositions and acid rain are closely related to atmospheric environment,weather,and climate change.In this study,the concentration levels and long-term trends of CO_(2),CH_(4),O_(3),PM_(2.5),PM_(10),and acid rain were presented at the Mt.Waliguan global baseline station in Qinghai,Shangdianzi and Lin'an regional background stations in the North China Plain(NCP)and the Yangtze River Delta region(YRD)of China based on the data observed until 2018.Significant increasing trends of CO_(2) were found at all of these stations.At Mt.Waliguan,the concentration levels and growth rate were consistent with the average values in the Northern Hemisphere(NH)and those observed at the Mauna Loa station in Hawaii.The CH_(4) also showed a upward tendency similar to that observed in NH.Compared with the observations at Mt.Waliguan global baseline station,the CO_(2) and CH_(4) mole fractions were higher at Shangdianzi and Lin'an regional background stations,indicating the important contributions of anthropogenic activities to the regional background level of CO_(2) and CH_(4).The annual averaged surface ozone showed increasing trends at Mt.Waliguan and Shangdianzi stations,whereas no clear trend was found at Lin'an station.Similar variations in the patterns of aerosol concentrations at Shangdianzi and Lin'an were found according to the PM_(2.5) or PM_(10) observations.Overall,the aerosol concentrations at both stations shown declining trends since the observations.However,two periods of high particle concentrations occurred in 2006-2007 and 2013-2014.The annual mean aerosol concentrations have continuously decreased after 2013-2014,indicating the effectiveness of pollution control in the NCP and YRD,especially since the implementation of the‘Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Air Pollution’in September 2013.Comparative analysis of aerosol with acid rain showed that the period with high concentrations of aerosols in the early years was consistent with that of severe acid rain pollution,suggesting that both aerosol pollution and severe acid rain are closely related to coal combustion emissions in China.As a result of the control of coal combustion emissions for acid and SO_(2),NO_(x) emissions have contributed more substantially to aerosols due to the rapid growth of vehicle ownership.A comparison of the trends of aerosols with the maximum daily 8-h average of surface ozone(MDA8)at Shangdianzi and Lin'an stations revealed the complicated relationship between aerosol reduction and ozone production,i.e.,together with the continuous improvement of particulate pollution in the NCP and YRD,the MDA8 at both stations showed a decreasing trend at first but subsequently increased after 2014 with aerosols remaining reduced.Such different variation patterns of the MDA8 with PM_(2.5)(or PM_(10))indicated the high challenge of synergic control of aerosol and ozone pollution in China. | ZHANG Yong JIN Jun-Li YAN Peng TANG Jie FANG Shuang-Xi LIN Wei-Li LOU Meng-Yun LIANG Miao ZHOU Qing JING Jun-Shan LI Ya-Nan JIA Xiao-Fang LYU Shan-Shan | 2020 | Advances in Climate Change Research2020,11,4: | 4 |

| 18 | Adjuvant chemotherapy may improve outcome of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer with metastasis of intrapulmonary lymph nodes after systematic dissection of N1 nodes显示文摘Objective: Survival benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy(AC) of patients with intrapulmonary lymph node(IPLN)metastasis(level 12-14) needs investigation.We evaluated the impact of AC on patients whose metastatic nodes were limited to intrapulmonary levels after systematic dissection of N1 nodes.Methods: First,155 consective cases of lung cancer confirmed as pathologic N1 were collected and evaluated.Patients received systematic dissection of N2 and N1 nodes.For patients with IPLN metastasis,survival outcomes were compared between those receiving AC and those not receiving AC.Results: In this group,112 cases(72.3%) had IPLN metastasis and 55 cases(35.5%) had N1 involvement limited to level 13-14 without further disease spread to higher levels.Patients with IPLN involvement had a better prognosis than that of patients with hilar-interlobar involvement.For the intrapulmonary N1 group(level 12-14-positive,level 10-11-negative or unknown,n=112),no survival benefit was found between the AC group and nonAC group [5-year overall survival(OS): 54.6±1.6 vs.50.4±2.4 months,P=0.177].However,76 of 112 cases for whom harvesting of level-10 and level-11 nodes was done did not show cancer involvement in pathology reports(level 12-14-positive,level 10-11 both negative),oncologic outcome was better for patients receiving AC than those not receiving AC in this subgroup(5-year OS: 57.3±1.5 vs.47.1±3.2 months,P=0.002).Conclusions: Oncologic outcome may be improved by AC for patients with involvement of N1 nodes limited to intrapulmonary levels after complete examination of N1 nodes. | Xing Wang Shi Yan Yaqi Wang Xiang Li Chao Lyu Yuzhao Wang Jia Wang Shaolei Li Lijian Zhang Yue Yang Nan Wu | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2018,30,6: | 2 |

| 20 | Cognitive Training in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment显示文摘Objective We investigated the feasibility and efficacy of cognitive training for older adults in rural settings and with low education levels, who have mild cognitive impairment(MCI). Methods Forty-five older adults(ages >65 years) with MCI were assigned to treatment or control groups, at a 2:1 ratio. Cognitive training occurred in the treatment group for 2 months. The cognitive abilities of the participants were assessed at pre-training, metaphase, and post-training time points, using the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment(Mo CA), Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment(LOTCA), and Hamilton Depression Scale(HAM-D). Results Following training, cognitive abilities improved in the treatment group, based on the total scores of all 4 measures, as well as specifically on the Mo CA and LOTCA. There were differences in the main effects of group and time point on some subscales, but these differences had little, if any, effect on the overall analyses. Conclusion The present study demonstrated that cognitive training has beneficial effects on attention, language, orientation, visual perception, organization of visual movement, and logical questioning in patients with MCI.
