| 1 | GS6, A Member of the GRAS Gene Family,Negatively Regulates Grain Size in Rice显示文摘Grain size is an important yield related trait in rice.Intensive arti cial selection for grain size during domestication is evidenced by the larger grains of most of today’s cultivars compared with their wild relatives.However,the molecular genetic control of rice grain size is still not well characterized.Here,we report the identi cation and cloning of Grain Size 6(GS6),which plays an important role in reducing grain size in rice.A premature stop at the t348 position in the coding sequence(CDS)of GS6 increased grain width and weight signi cantly.Alignment of the CDS regions of GS6 in 90 rice materials revealed three GS6alleles.Most japonica varieties(95%)harbor the Type I haplotype,and 62.9%of indica varieties harbor the Type II haplotype.Association analysis revealed that the Type I haplotype tends to increase the width and weight of grains more than either of the Type II or Type III haplotypes.Further investigation of genetic diversity and the evolutionary mechanisms of GS6showed that the GS6gene was strongly selected in japonica cultivars.In addition,a'ggc'repeat region identi ed in the region that encodes the GRAS domain of GS6 played an important historic role in the domestication of grain size in rice.Knowledge of the function of GS6might aid efforts to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that control grain development and evolution in rice plants,and could facilitate the genetic improvement of rice yield. | Lianjun Sun Xiaojiao Li Yongcai Fu Zuofeng Zhu Lubin Tan Fengxia Liu Xianyou Sun Xuewen Sun Chuanqing Sun | 2013 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2013,55,10: | 44 |

| 4 | Mega-shoaling in carbonate platform of the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation,Sichuan Basin, Southwest China显示文摘Shoaling is a common type of sedimentation in the evolution of carbonate platform,and commonly has poor continuity.This paper presents a newly discovered and rare type of shoaling,i.e.,mega-shoaling in nearly basin scale,which is developed in the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation of the Sichuan Basin,southwest China.During the Leikoupo time,the studied Sichuan Basin experienced hot and dry climate conditions and developed a carbonate platform within a restricted epicontinental sea.In B sub-layer of the Lei-1-1 sub-member of the Leikoupo Formation a series of grainstones of shoal facies accumulated throughout almost the entire basin,thereby generating features associated with basin-scale mega-shoaling.By detailed core examination and microscopic observation of thin sections,it is shown that the lithology of this set of grainstones is dominated by doloarenite(calcarenite)followed by oolitic dolomite(limestone).In addition,it contains three types of sedimentary sequences characterized by upward-coarsening and upward-shallowing as the followings:restricted lagoon to platform interior beach;restricted lagoon to platform interior beach and to platform flat;and tidal flat to peritidal beach.Subsequently,a multicyclic stratigraphic division and correlation revealed that this set of grainstones can be well traced and compared horizontally,and is generally isochronous.In addition,a template for logging facies,established based on core calibrations and logging data,was employed to analyze the 235 wells in the basin.The results demonstrate the shoal grainstones to be 10–40 m thick with a15×104km2continuous distribution area.These findings indicate that the carbonate platform developed mega-shoals within a short period of time.The genesis of such a mega-shoaling was investigated by focusing on various shoaling conditions,such as paleo-tectonics,paleo-geomorphology,paleo-climate,sea-level changes,and palaeo-hydrodynamics.A specific combination of independent geological factors creates beneficial geomorphologic conditions for the mega-shoaling including a quiescent paleo-tectonic environment,relatively flat paleo-geomorphology and evaporites filling up and leveling off.In addition,a stably settling carbonate platform underwent sea-level fluctuations through swift transgressions and protracted regressions,which is not only conducive to continuous,multicyclic and superimposed vertical development of grain beaches but also beneficial for the horizontal migration,coalescence and superimposition of individual grain beaches.As a consequence,large-scale and continuously-distributed grain beach sedimentation emerges and mega-shoals develop. | TAN XiuCheng LI Ling LIU Hong CAO Jian WU XiaoQing ZHOU SuYan SHI XueWen | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,3: | 12 |
| 5 | A proposed surface resistance model for the Penman-Monteith formula to estimate evapotranspiration in a solar greenhouse显示文摘Greenhousing is a technique to bridge season gap in vegetable production and has been widely used worldwide. Calculation of water requirement of crops grown in greenhouse and determination of their irrigation schedules in arid and semi-arid regions are essential for greenhouse maintenance and have thus attracted increased attention over the past decades. The most common method used in the literature to estimate crop evapotranspiration(ET) is the Penman-Monteith(PM) formula. When applied to greenhouse, however, it often uses canopy resistance instead of surface resistance. It is understood that the surface resistance in greenhouse is the result of a combined effect of canopy restriction and soil-surface restriction to water vapor flow, and the relative dominance of one restriction over another depends on crop canopy. In this paper, we developed a surface resistance model in a way similar to two parallel resistances in an electrical circuit to account for both restrictions. Also, considering that wind speed in greenhouse is normally rather small, we compared three methods available in the literature to calculate the aerodynamic resistance, which are the r_a^1 method proposed by Perrier(1975a, b), the r_a^2 method proposed by Thom and Oliver(1977), and the r_a^3 method proposed by Zhang and Lemeu(1992). We validated the model against ET of tomatoes in a greenhouse measured from sap flow system combined with micro-lysimeter in 2015 and with weighing lysimeter in 2016. The results showed that the proposed surface resistance model improved the accuracy of the PM model, especially when the leaf area index was low and the greenhouse was being irrigated. We also found that the aerodynamic resistance calculated from the r_a^1 and r_a^3 methods is applicable to the greenhouse although the latter is slightly more accurate than the former. | 7 | Expression of neurocan mRNA and ultrastructure of brain tissue after cerebral ischemia and reperfusion in stroke-prone renovascular hypertensive rats treated by electroacupuncture显示文摘We established a stroke-prone renovascular hypertensive rat model by bilateral constriction of the renal artery with sliver loop clips. After ten weeks, middle cerebral artery occlusion was induced for 2 hours. The rats then received electro-acupuncture at Baihui (DU 20) and Dazhui (DU 14) after onset of ischemia for 30 days. In situ hybridization study showed that electroacupuncture significantly reduced the number of neurocan mRNA-positive cells in the ischemic penumbra and hippocampal tissues of rats. Electron microscopy results demonstrated that the structure of neurons and blood vessels in the ischemic tissues were restored with electroacupuncture. | 9 | Assignment and expression patterns of porcine muscle-specific isoform of phosphoglycerate mutase gene显示文摘It has been reported that the muscle-specific isoform (type M, PGAM2) of phosphoglycerate mutase (PGAM) is a housekeeping en- zyme; it catalyzes the conversion of 3-phosphoglycerate into 2-phosphoglycerate in the glycolysis process to release energy. It is encoded by the Pgam2 gene. In this study, the cDNA of the porcine Pgam2 was cloned. This gene contains an open reading frame of 765 bp en- coding a protein of 253 residues, and the predicted protein sequences share high similarity with other mammalians, 96% identity with humans, and 94% identity with mouse and rats. Pgam2 was mapped to SSC18q13-q21 by the RH panel. In this region, there are several QTLs, such as fat ratio, lean percentage, and diameter of muslce fiber, which affect meat production and quality. The reverse transcrip- tase-polymerase chain reaction revealed that the porcine Pgam2 gene was mainly expressed in the muscle tissue (skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle), and was expressed highly at skeletal muscle development stages (embryonic periods: 33, 65, and 90 days post-conception (dpc); postnatal pigs: 4 days and adult). This indicates that the Pgam2 gene plays an important role in muscle growth and development. | 15 | Insight into selective removal of copper from high-concentration nickel solutions with XPS and DFT:New technique to prepare 5N-nickel with chelating resin显示文摘An efficient and profitable separation process was proposed to prepare 5N(the purity of the metal solution reaches 99.999%) high-purity nickel from 3N nickel-solutions using Purolite S984. The adsorption performance of this superior resin, especially its selectivity for metal ions,was explored quantitatively. The maximum adsorption capacity for copper was 2.286 mmol/g calculated by the Langmuir model, which was twice as large as that for nickel. In the binary systems, the adsorption capacity for nickel was decreased by 45%, indicating direct competition for the active sites. The infinite separation factor for copper versus nickel exceeded 300, revealing the feasibility of preparing5N-level high-purity nickel solutions, which was further verified using the 800 BV(bed volume) effluent in the column dynamic process.According to the cost–benefit analysis, purification contributed to a profit of approximately 60,000 USD per cycle, and the investment return period was less than 1/3 years. Density functional theory analysis confirmed that four nitrogen atoms would be involved in the coordination complex and thus a structure involving two five-membered rings could be achieved. | 17 | Biochar can Increase Chinese Cabbage(Brassica oleracea L.)Yield,Decrease Nitrogen and Phosphorus Leaching Losses in Intensive Vegetable Soil显示文摘There are few evidences on the effect of biochar on vegetable yield,nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)leaching losses under intensive vegetable production soil.The current field plot scale study evaluated responses of Chinese cabbage(Brassica oleracea L.)yield,N and P leaching losses using five N treatments of common N application rate according to local farmers’practice(N100%),reducing 20%or 40%N fertilizer(N80%and N60%),and reducing 40%N fertilizer but incorporating 10 or 20 t/ha biochar(N60%+BC10 and N60%+BC20).Results showed that N80%and N60%decreased both the cabbage economic and leaf yields by 6.8%-36.3%and 27.4%-37.7%,respectively.Incorporation of biochar with reduced N fertilizer rates improved the cabbage yield,in particular the N60%+BC20 matched the yield that observed in N100%treatment.Enhanced N and P uptake capacities of cabbage shoot probably contributed the higher vegetable production under both biochar amendment schemes.Biochar application mitigated the NH_(4)^(+)-N and total P leaching losses by 20%-30%and 29%-32%,respectively,compared with their counterpart treatment N60%.Nevertheless,biochar exerted no influence on the NO_(3)^(-)-N leaching.In addition,soil organic matter content was recorded with 7.4%-28.7%higher following 10-20 t/ha biochar application.In conclusion,biochar application can increase economic yield of cabbage via increasing N and P use efficiency,decrease N and P leaching losses,and improve soil quality in an intensive vegetable production system. | Haijun Sun Paramsothy Jeyakumar Hongdong Xiao Xuewen Li Jiayou Liu Min Yu Prabal Bir Jung Rana Weiming Shi | 2022 | Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,1: | 3 |
| 18 | The calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II inhibitor KN-93 protects rat cerebral cortical neurons from N-methyl-D-aspartic acid-induced injury显示文摘In this study, primary cultured cerebral cortical neurons of Sprague-Dawley neonatal rats were treated with 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 μM calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II inhibitor KN-93 after 50 μM N-methyl-D-aspartic acid-induced injury. Results showed that, compared with N-methyl-D-aspartic acid-induced injury neurons, the activity of cells markedly increased, apoptosis was significantly reduced, leakage of lactate dehydrogenase decreased, and intracellular Ca(2+) concentrations in neurons reduced after KN-93 treatment. The expression of caspase-3, phosphorylated calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II and total calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II protein decreased after KN-93 treatment. And the effect was apparent at a dose of 1.0 μM KN-93.
